Ten Bictcles Confiscated. The bicy
cle tax collectors brought Jn 10 wheels and
three "watches to the Courthouse yester
day. There are now 25 bicycles locked up
In the grand jury-roora. awaiting redemp
tion by the owners. Each wheel is tagged
with the owner's name, so that there can
be no mistake. The bicycles obtained In
yesterday's haul were seized on the Flanders-street
path. Some riders appear to
think the law does not apply to the paths
In the city limits. It applies to all paths,
fis they were all built out of the blcyclB
tax fund. Bicyclists can ride free of
license wherever they please so long as
they keep off the paths, and those who
use the paths must pay the license tax of
1 per year or take the consequences.
East to Reach Macleat Park. Park
Commissioner Haw kins said yesterday that
the trail leading from the City Park to
Macleay Park has beea widened so that
people may pass over it without the dif
ficulty which -was noticeable in the past.
Colonel Hawkins also said that the Com
'mlssloners request that picnickers and
others refrain from marring in any way
the beauty of Macleay Park, which is
the scene of many Sunday dinner parties.
It is requested that no fires be started in
the park, and also that no papers or din
ner baskets be left there.
Seeks Factort Location. Secretary
Moore, of the Board of Trade, has re
ceived a letter from "W. T. Ford, of Buf
falo, N. Y., inquiring about the conditions
for the establishment of a factory for
sheet iron and tinware. Mr. Ford states
that he is satisfied that Portland is a
good location for such a factory and he
asks at what rates charcoal tin plate, re
fined black and galvanized Iron, etc, can
be purchased in this city. The informa
tion was forwarded to him by Secretary
Moore, and an answer is awaited.
Private Telephones jn Courthouse.
H. P. Emery, the Courthouse carpenter,
is engaged in putting in a private tele
phone line between the offices of the
County Clerk, Recorder and Clerk of the
Circuit Court. These offices are now un
der one head, fand County Clerk Fields
desires telephone communication estab
lished between them, so that he will not
have to go from one department to the
other when he has anything to say. Small
telephones, "kitchen 'phones," will be
used.
