THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, APRIL IS, 1902.

COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL NEWS
.A. belated bulge in wheat, -which set Jn !
after the appearance of the Government
report April 10, -was the most Interest- j
Ins feature of the general trade eitua
t!on for the week ending yesterday. The
advance In the East his already amount
ed to over 2 cents per bushel, and spme
reflection In the strength is found In the
local market. There is very little of the
cereal selling, but with an improvement"
in the market, a considerable quantity
would1 yet be dragged out. There was
quite a sharp flurry in potatoes during
the week, but the price shot up so sud
denly that very heavy offerings poured
in. receipts for the past 24 hours running
over 6000 sacks, ,a quantity that staggered
some of the buyers.-- While a few re
tained their nerve sufficiently to pay up
to $1 40 and $1 45 per cental, most of the
buyers would not bo within B and 10
cents of those figures. It was supposed
thit the fine weather would offer such
on inducement fr farmers to stay at
home that theic would be very light re
ceipts, but the attraction of $1 50 per
cental was too great, and farm work
was abandoned and potatoes started U
market in vast quantities.
The butter market dropped back anoth
er 5c per roll Friday and closed the week
rather heavy at 22c for best stock,
with a further decline almost a certainty.
Eggs braced up considerably, and were
scarce yesterday at 15c, with some deal
ers holding out for 16c. The market will
hardly stand the latter figure, bnt is de
cidedly firm at 15c Some dealers predict
a reaction, but a slight reduction will
result in the stock going into cold stor
age again. Poultry sold out clean yester
day at full prices, there being a fine de
mand for everything for the Sunday
trade. Pork products are firm and high
er, hams showing an advance of nearly a
cent a pound. No new business was re
ported in 1901 hops during the week, but
some new crop contracting was reported,
and from Salem comes a report of one
1903 crop contract, the price stipulated
being 10c per pound.
Mohair is active, and some good-sized
lots have changed hands. Prices are bet
ter than last year, and have improved
since the opening of the present season.
"Wool is quiet but steady, with a fine out
look for a big clip in this state. The
grocery market for the week was fea
tureless, except for a heavy buying of
sugar, -the advance, of a week ago seem
ing to renew the demand, which has
been unprecedented since the price fell
under $4 50 per hundred.
WHEAT Three cargoes of wheat and
one of flour cleared during the week, the
total shipments being in excess of 500,000
bushels, which is a pretty fair volume of
business for so late in the season, and
at a time when there is such a small
amount of new business doing. These
shipments, however, will not be dupli
cated in proportions again this season,
and not until pie new crop begins to move
will there be any great degree of activity
in the market. Quotations yesterday
ranged from C3&c to 64c for Walla Walla,
with very little selling, and most of the
holders asking more money. The bulge
in Chicago as usual tightens the hold of
farmers on the cereal, and as long as the
market shows an upward tendency In
the East, it will be a difficult matter to
shake out anything of consequence lo
cally. Freights are steady, and slightly higher
for new crop tonnage. Shipowners are
still laboring undec the Impression that
there are -vast stocks of wheat yet to
come out of the Pacific Northwest, and
until they understand that 10,000,000 bush
els of the 53,000,000 bushels reported by
some experts was "hot air," they will
be slow to accept reasonable rates. So
far as reported, between 15 and 20 ships
have been chartered for new crop load
ing, at rates ranging from 27s 6d to S2s
6d. Some of these ships have the option
of loading at San Francisco, and nearly
all of them have both Portland and Puget
Sound options. As the barley crop in
California promises to be a large one, a
good proportion of the early ships will
probably be s"ent to San Francisco. Spot
tonnage seems in poor demand, as none
of the ships now in port can secure 2Gs
3d, which was the rate generally asked for
the past few days. California's record
hreaking crop is shrinking a little earlier
than usual this year, and the Commercial
News under date of April 10 says:
"The weather in California has been
warmer and the growth of the grain more
rapid. The northern and central districts
still promise heavy yields, while in the
southern districts steady improvement is
reported. The crop will Undoubtedly bo
large, but the unfavorable weather -early
in the Spring precludes any possibility
of having a 'record-breaking yield The
export movement continues satisfactory.
During the week three full cargoes and
three paVt cargoes were cleared."
The Kansas State Board 6t Agricul
ture, under date of April 5, Issued a report
based on a careful canvass of every
neighborhood in the state on April 1. In
cluded 3n the report was the following:
"Last year's Winter wheat area was
5,248,547 acres; In December the growers
reported the sowings for this year's crop
as at least 12 per cent greater, or a total
of 5,883,643 acre?. They now report that
of this, 18 per cent, or 1,080,709 acres, has
been so damaged by unfavorable weather
or other conditions that it has been or
will be plowed up, and the land devoted
to oats, .corn and other crops; likewise
the condition on the remaining ?2 per
cent, or 4,802,934 acres, as oelng 74. In
the 30 counties which last year produced
nearly four-fifths of the state's 90,000,000
bushels there are reported 3,344,492 acres
(7S.9 per cent) which will be left to ma
ture, with a present condition averag
ing 70.
"This remainder in itself constitutes a
vast area of wheat, now past the perils of
Winter and at the threshold of April
showers and sunshine, entitled to a highly
respectable fating, together wltfi credit
for having afforded four or five months
of opportune and luxuriant pasturage, of
a value equal to or greater than the en
tire cost of, all the acres planted. There
are, nevertheless, from various localities
reports of a deceptive, unexplained debil
ity In the crowns and roots of plants
quite green In fields that earlier promised
fairly well, but whichrains and the sea
son have not improved as would ordi
narily be expected, and their permanent
failure to rally as hoped would be some
thing of a factor later. Doubtless con
siderable of the injury is attributable to
over-pasturing. Except the Hessian fly
in two or three counties, no insects are
mentioned."

NEW YORK BANK STATEMENT.
N'et Gain In Cash of $103,000 De
crease In Loans.
NEW YORK. April 12. The Financier
says:
The official statement of the New York
Associated Banks for last week showed
a net gain in cash of $108,000, specie, hav
ing decreased $1,23S,400, and legal ten
ders increased $1,306,400. This net gain
very nearly corresponds with that which
was estimated on the basis of the trace
ablo movements of money during the
week, this estimate being a gain of $292.
400 by the banks. The comparatively
slight difference of $184,400 between the
estimated and the official gain may be
accounted for by the system of averages
which affected the Interior bank move
ments and the gold exports to Europe.
The loans showed a decrease of $6,841,
C00. indicating that there must have been
considerable calling in of loans by the
banks, caused by efforts to rectify their
position as regards reserves. It Is note
worthy that the surplus of the banks,
as shown by the statement of April 5,
was the lowest since November 18, 1899,
when, the banks Indicated a deficiency of
$312,025. Doubtless it was owing to this
fact that the banks generally sought,
through a reduction of loans, to restore
reserves, for had there been an expan
sion in this Item the loss of gold, which
was foreshadowed early last week, and
which was reflected in the reduction of
$1,258,400 specie shown by the statement,
would most probably have carried the
banks very close to the limit cf 25 per
cent reserve to deposits. There was a
decrease of $7,256,900 in deposits last week.
Though the loss of loans, less the net
gain in cash, calls for a change of $5,733,
GOO In this item, the difference of $523,300
may be regarded as unimportant. The
required reserve was reduced to $1,714,
225, consequently the net gain of $108,000
In .cash caused an increase In reserve of
$1,922,225. This Item now stands at $4,571,
750, against $7,936,200 at the corresponding
period a year ago. The deposits of pub
lic funds in banks of this city, which
will be made during the current week,
will Increase the cash reserves, and at
the same time they will diminish the
drain of money into the sub-treasury,
these deposits being made through the

CHICAGO, April 12. Interest in corn
easily outran all else of a speculative
nature. The gradual advance Of the past

The depleted stocks in the Southwestern
markets have -given St Louis and Kan

was still stronger and was bidding
eagerly at the relatively cheaper article
in this market, prices responded with
vigor. Receipts were light, and the be

After years of patient study, and delv

able with the aid of a mysterious com
pound, known only to himself, produced
as a result of the years he has spent in

is known to the human body. There is
no doubt ot the doctor's earnestness in

which he advances Is one of reason and
