Amusements Today.
CORDRAVS "Human Heart."
METROPOLITAN 'That Man."
Bcbguui Rotcjded Up. Surrounded by
trunks and valises containing $500
worth of jewelry and clothing in
bis possession, W. W. Scott, 40
years old. -was arrested last night by De
tectives Snow and Kerrigan, charged with
larceny and robbery. Scott visited the
Good Samaritan Hospital, last night, and
was followed by detectives to his room In
a .Fourth-street lodging-house, and arrest
ed. The police have been searching for
Scott for some time. He had In his room
five watches, three gold cuff buttons, a
porcelain clock, a silver heart bearing the
Inscription "A. D. J., Nov. 12. 1S95," a gold
locket with "Mlzpah, A. S.": several Con
federate bills, a checkbook of Ladd &
Tilton, a bankbook of Mrs. Vera Grange, i
a paii of eyeglasses taken from a house
at Mount Tabor, clothing, linen, etc The
police say the "work" has taken him two
years' time.
Golf Contests. Last Wednesday the
second competition for the Mrs. "Wesley
Ladd cup was field, and Mrs. W. B. Ayer
secured entry by a net scorp of 57. The
knock-out for men is proceeding and the
first series of games will be completed
by tomorrow. Next Saturday a tourna
ment for handicap mixed foursomes will
bo held for the benefit of the handicap
committee, who then retire from ofBco
after a year of service, which has given
satisfaction to all but a few. At the
annual meeting of the club a very satis
factory report was brought in by Presi
dent Macmaster, showing the club to be

Life TJxDEit w kitkh3 Meet. The life
Underwriter Association of Oregon
held a special meeting at room
603 Marquam building last night, at
which 10 new members were elected. It
was arranged to appoint a committee
to prepare a programme for the annual
meeting to be held February 2, C, A.
McCarger being named as chairman. An
address will be delivered by a prominent
attorney on the topic, "Life Insurance
From a Legal Standpoint." At the con
clusion of the business meeting a banquet
will be held at the Portland Hotel. The
organization now consists of over 30 mem
bers and is expected to increase to about
100.
Grand Army Campfirk. The success
attending the joint campflre of Lincoln
Garlield and George Wright Posts last
month has led them to announce another
, of the same kind for Tuesday evening.
December 11, at Grand Army Hall, corner
of First and Taylor streets. There will
be a new deal in the selection of speak
ers for five or ten-minute addresses, In
terspersed with songs, followed by the
usual old soldiers' collation of beans,
crackers and coffee. The doors will b
thrown open to visitors at 8 o'clock, and
a cordial invitation Is extended to all
comrades in the order, both resident and
sojourning.
Cleaning Out "Coontown." A Tatd
on part of the colored population
of the North End was conducted last
night by sergeant Moore and eight po
licemen. Twenty-five colored men whom
the police state have no visible means of
obtaining a living were arrested, charged
with vagrancy. Chief of Police McLauch
lan said "There have been several shoot
ing scrapes and thefts on the part of cer
tain colored North End people lately, and
the people implicated often hushed up
the affair, without letting the police know
anything about it. We are going to break
up the tough element in the North End."
Coptinq the Tax Roll. Five rooms In
the third story of the City Hall are "being
prepared for the use of 28 clerks, who
will begin tomorrow copying the tax roll
of Mi'tnomah County for the year 1S00.
There aie 14 books to be transcribed and
two men will be employed on each book.
The work will probably last until the
first of the ensuing year. The men are
In the employ of County Clerk Holmes,
and have all neen engaged. The state
tax levy will be made at Salem when
each county in the state has sent in Its
tax roll. They will probably be some
time in January.

Agreeable to custom, the Salvation Army
of Portland will give a free Christmas

sent out, but. of course, it is not possible
to reach all who would like to contrib
ute. Offerings in money or food may be

Will Speak of the Great Scotch
Poet. Rev. A. A. Morrison, of Trinity
Episcopal Church, has consented to de
llvei an address on the Scotch poet,
Robert Burns, at the Burns festival of
Portland Caledonian Club, next month.
