THE STTKD'AY- OEEGONIAN, POBTLAND, DECEMBER .2, 1900.
PHILIPPINE WOMAN GENERAL
Remarkable Filipino Wko Sid Not
- Resist American Occupation.
Manila Freedom.
General Ageja, of Bungungbung-Lacuna,
Is the only -woman General In the -Insurgent
Army- Since the American occu
pation ehe has given up the revolutionary
cause and Is now General In an. army of
industrials, -whom she commands as rig
idly as her gallant Filipino soldiers that
ehe led so successfully against the Span
lards. Bungungbung Is a small pueblo across
the lake from Santa Cruz. It consists of
about 100 nlpa houses and not more than
200 Filipinos live there, and in all the
barrios near by. The surrounding coun
try Is wild and mountainous. There Is
little cultivation, and the entire popula
tion live by cutting down, the extensive
forests and manufacturing firewood for
the Manila market. It was In the midst
of these rough, rugged scenes that Gen
eral Ageja was bom and reared.
From her early childhood she showed
great strength of mind and capacity for
business. Her father was a sort of chief
at that neck of the woods. aid when her
father passed in his checks Ageja con
tinued to act as Presidente and control
the output of wood that went yearly from
the district.
When the Filipinos rebelled in 1E96,
Agulnaldo. appreciating the prestige of
this wonderful woman, gave her a com
mission as General in the revolutionary
army, and she soon organized all the dif
ferent barrios into a perfect military or
ganization of woodchoppers, apparently
bolomen, when there was a chance to do
up a detachment of Spanish soldiers. In
this manner she extended her Jurisdiction
beyond the confines of Bungungbung, and
has held the prestige she gained in those
days ever since. Today she controls the
labor of 2000 natives, who live far Into
the mountains, but who have a. wonder
ful respect for General Aeeja.
In the field she showed herself the mis
tress of the art of war, and did great
damage to the Spanish troops stationed
at different points in Laguna Province.
Since American occupation she claims
to have devoted herself to Industrial pur
suits, and her 2000 followers are kept
busy cutting -wood and delivering It to
the different contractors who supply the 4
city.
Your correspondent had the pleasure of
an interview with this enterprising and
Interesting Filipino lady at her home in
Bungungbung. She welcomed him with
the warmth characteristic of the Filipino
character. The little woman did not look
big enough to sway the brigade of bolo
men, but ther was about her an air of
command thai struck her visitor forcibly.
All her servants seemed to work like
clockwork, and her power to sway the
big bolomen was well Illustrated during
the visit.
She talked freely of the situation and
showed a disposition for peace, and
throughout the conversation she always
eeemed to have an eye open for busi
ness and was open for a contract of wood.
She explained the method employed in
dealing -with the natives. She handles all
the wood and collects the money from the
contractors. The natives are paid their
share, and the General is widely known
jis most honest In her dealings with both
contractors and natives, and possibly It
has something to do with the wonderful
influence she -wields over her brigade of
bolomen, for they all carry a great big
toolo strapped to them.
The interview was broken into by the
arrival of one of the Lieutenants, who
told her that he had them, and the
"them" he referred to afterward proved
to be a, party of natives who had stolen
a large quantity of wood from a casco
that she bad loaded the night before.
GcrniN Good Subject to Forget.
Saturday Evening. Post.
"While scientists themselves reluctantly
admit that not all germs are harmful,
they even more reluctantly admit that In
the present state of science It Is quite Im
possible to tell Just which are harmful
and which are not. Let us not, then, In
discriminately abuse them; for even a
germ may turn. Then what Is there to
do? Forget about germs; don't worry
about them: Just pay attention to the
sensible rules In regard to dressing and
eating and drinking, and let that suffice.
A prominent scientist was telling th
story of Pandora's box to his little son.
He was- telling It with all possible dra
matic effect. "And she slowly lifted the
lid and peeped within, and then, what
do you think came out?" "Germs," cried
his little son, promptly. Let us put that
very Idea of germs back In that box and
close the lid.
