and Morrison streets nave transformed
it into a modern structure. The upper
floors have been entirely reconstructed
and converted into an up-to-date Toom-Ing-house
and will be known henceforth
as The Cosmos. All the rooms are newly
and elegantly furnished, are cozy and
comfortable, and are illuminated with
both gas and electricity. The spacious
hallways aro nicely carpeted, and the
whole interior is both cheerful and invit
ing. 'The Cosmos is under entirely new
anT thoroughly competent management,
and will be positively conducted as a
strictly first-class house. The building Is
very centrally located, and has two en
trances, one at 2SSVS Morrison street and
the other at ISOls Fourth street.
Mania for Runnino Awat. The Ring
vllle boy, aged S years, committed from
Clatsop County, has evidently a mania for
running away. Before being committed
he ran away from home 10 times, and
since being received at the Boys' &
Girls' Aid Society has eloped twice. Su
perintendent Gardner has bad an overall
suit made especially .for him to wear
around the Home, one side of which Is
bright red and the other side blue, thus
making the little fellow look conspicu
ous should he again run away.
Teachers Institute. Superintendent
Robinson has completed all arrangements
for the annual institute of the teachers
of Multnomah County, to be held Septem

Is only natural, as toe great va.ue of
this article has already manifested Itself
in this section wherever employed. Think
ing men, experts in wood construction,
believe that Avenarius Carbollneum is
destined to be used a3 extensively as
paint, and predict that It will not only
prove an economic blessing to all who
employ lumber for building pufpsses, but
will also stimulate the lumber trade to
a point heretofoie undreamed of.
Metal will be discarded for wood Jn
I many erections where the former is now

rots It with extraordinary rapidity. Es
pecially 1b this true when It is ascer
tained by these journals, as It has been,
that Avenarius Carbollneum Is used by
tho leading governments of the world,
Including the United States, for bridges,
locks, dams, canals, ships, barraoks. etc,
and by firms so far apart and different
In character as the Krupp Steel Works,
of Essen, Germany; the Pabst Brewing
Company., of Milwaukee, and tho Knick
erbocker Ice Company, of New York, all
of whom protect every Inch of wood In
their plants with this celebrated pre
servative. The purposes for which lt may be used
on this coast are numberless. Cities can
use it with economic advantage for road
beds, bridges, pavements and wharves;
shipbuilders for ships, ropes, and sails;
miners for shorelng timbers; fanners for
houses, barns, agricultural implements,
fences and vine poles1, railroads for ties,
cars and trestles.
In fact, from a wooden shoe to the-sup-porta
and exposed timbers of a mam
moth frame exposition building?, there Is
no wooden construction which is not
strengthened and quintupled in longevity
by treatment with wood's patent protector.

"There are hundreds of piano forte
maker? in the Uaited States." says the
New York Tribune, "but not over four
are undlsputably in the front rank, and
prominent among the four is the house of
Weber. Although its founder., like the
originators of the other" leading houses,
is no longer living, the great factory
which he established still goes on., and
the Weber warerooms contain today more
exquisite examples .pf the. piano makers'
art than were ever'before shown by tlds
renowned concern. The elder Weber was
a genius In the realm of tone produc
tion, and it has been -often said that the
quality that Stradivarius bestowed upon
the violin Weber Imparted to his piano
forte. His successors have strictly main
tained the high standard of excellence es
tablished. In the early days of the con
