Ifr THE SUNDAY OBEGOSriAar, PORTrANB, AUGUST 26, 1900. CAPE NONE BOOM BURST HARD X.T7CK STORT FROM OVERRATED COUNTRY. THE. Heat Rushed la to Find Gold That Qid.Sot Exist, and Are Nott Anx ious to Get Home. WASKC3r02C, Au& '.20. Th heavy run of alluring" stories setting forth the fabulous -wealth of Cape :Nbme,-has fallen off very materially of late, and Instead -era repeated reports that Cape Js'ome Is a much overrated goia field, which, -while It possesses cold and -wealth. Is a bad place for the vast majority of fortune seekers. Among- those -who forsook a good livelihood In the States to find wealth fa JXome -was a prominent attor ney of "Washington, Just returned, -who gives anything: but a flattering descrip tion of the new gold fields. He says: "The conditions at 2Come this Summer are such as to make a heart that is humble content -with his home almost anywhere else. I arrived at Nome May 8, and found the camp hardly changed to general appearance since last FalL Probablr 2300 people -wintered there. Uig-bt hundred arrived from Dawson and the Yukon River between February and April, coming- 3500 miles by dog teams. These people had money, and knew enough of the country to bring the cash Instead of letters; .of credit. They also came -with Klondike Ideas "oT values, and paid any old price for a business location, md those of them -who had not the price showed their appreciation of the value of real estate by Jumping every unoccupied Jot in sight. The consequence -was that, although -we -were the first Spring new comers to arrive, -we found real estate prices at the top notch. Fourteen thou sand dollars -was refused for a "vacant lot on Front street, tho only business street in the city, and nono -was offered for less than 55009. "The first gold news for us "was that 530,000 in dust had been brought in from the beach diggings at the mouth of Top kok River, 40 miles cast of Nome. The etrike there -was made In April, and it was -worked out -when -we arrived. It Is estimated that $400,000 was taken out -there; $30,000 in dust had been brought In from one of XJndblom's placer claims, on a creek near town, and -work was said to have begun on the creeks. Some scat tering rockers were at work on the beach, and even on parts of Front street east of the line of buildings. Everything looked promising. Dog teams were in great de mand for local transportation. The great Heet of ships began to arrive June S, and irom then until the .end of June there wore dally Trom 75 to as high aB 65 ships anchored off the Nome beach. "It Is .estimated that $2,000,000 worth of freight was piled along the beach during that month. Colonel "Wright, who Is there as Deputy Collector of Customs, told mo lie could ray 'from ships' reports to him that as many as 18,000 people had arrived by tho end of June. However, I know of one ship reporting 500 passengers .when in fact she carried 1100, and the total would also bo Increased by many sailing ves sels not reporting .at all. There were at one time 25,000 people there. "While the people kept coming, the pold dust did not. Prospectors returned, eaying the .whole country for hundreds of miles was staked two or three times over. Others said that what was staked was no good. Stocks of goods and mining .ma chinery were sold for less than the freight cost. A syndicate owning land on Front street, which had refused .$300 per front foot In the middle of June, was glad to sell some -of It at 533 per foot by -the middle of July. "We were told to wait for rain to fill tho creeks for sluicing, and then the camp would boom. But the rain has not come, and the senson Is nearly gone, Moreover, there ar few claims In chape to take advantage of the rain, should it come. "The boach, so far as Nome Is Inter ested in It, Is unquestionably a failure. It has been worked out. I mean as a gen eral proposition Occasionally a small ispot Is struck where the pay streak seems to have been untouched. It is perhaps too early to pass judgment on Nome as a mining camp. There are unquestionably eomo rich claims These are the alien claims now In litigation and in the hands of a rocelx'cr. But I have had the most discouraging reports from men who have no interests to soil, but went there to buy. J. K. Birch, who developed one of the best mines of Cripple Creek, and who is t thorough miner, was a-fel!owpassen- gor of mine returning. He gave me a list of the crooks his party had visited. The list fills a good-sized sheet of letter paper, and embraces all tho well-known terri tory around Nome. They spent money in prospecting, and wont there to buy, but found nothing which they thought good pay." Northwestern Pensions. "WASHINGTON. Aug:. 20.
