true that restriction of pig Iron output, both
by steel companies and by merchant fur

FINANCIAL NEWS
ldlescss. The single laUure announced In
the Central West -this week Is not signifi
cant of any more than the fact that Inde
pendent skelp mills are practically elimi
nated as a factor under the concentration of
the wrought-ptpe trade. The condition of
credits Is generally healthy, but collections
are rather slower.
The trade In foundry iron is still far frcrr
satisfactory, being practically unchanged In
the midst of activity of all products. "

Jfcvr Elements of Activity -Cauaed
Better Distribution of Business.
NEW TOR.K, Aug. 3. Sugar, Brooklyn
Transit, B. i O. and Cnlon Pacific fell some
what into the oackground today. An effort
was made by the traders to bring forward
some of tha, other railroad stocks to take
the place of these recent favorites. These
did not a all to' fill the rap left by the
quietude ot the mercurial specialties, but'
the day's dealings fiad an appearanc? of
rather better dislributluj as a result of
these new elements of activity, and the gen
eral tone of the market was firm and ap
proaching positive strength at times; The
center of this strength was the granger '
group, which was favorably affected by the
show of increased earnings for the- fourth
week In July by the St. Paul system. The
showing was particularly effective because It
compared with a very high level of earnings
last year, and because St. Paul has rather
been looked upon as the leader of the re
actionary tendency In railroad earnings In re
gard to the falhngoff in general business.
There was no special feature of traffic to
explain the recoiery, which contrasts with a
decrease for each of the earlier weeks of
the month. It is attributed to 'general mer
chandise traffic.
There was renewed effort also to advance
Union Pacific, which met with some success.
At the high level, the grangers, Southern
Pacific and South westerns were generally a'
point or more to the good. The-moTeircnt
was dlrecjcd In part to the short interest,
and when it covered in part, relapsed Into
seml-stagnatlon and dropped lower. The trad
ers made something of the large Increase in
cash prospect In tomorrow's bank . state
ment. The time money'market continued to
show an easy tone today. Sterling, ex
change advanced a fraction, and exchango
houses expect gold 1o go, out to London next ,
week.

active and without any feature. Total tales,
