The bridge repair- cret? have been engaged
In tightening up the bolts, large and small,
on the Madison-fitreet bridge. The 39b
is hy no means a small one, a the
seven new spans of the brWge have to
be gone over" and every screw tightened
up. This is necessitated by the shrink
age of the timbers as they dry out under
the extreme heat pf Summer. The large
bolts of the lower cords &re taken up an
average of half an Inch. Outside of the
surface of the draw the bridge is In ex
cellent condition. The surface of the
draw is wearing rapidly, and but for the
fact that the decking is double it would
be unsafe for travel, as the top layer
is splintered and gone entirely in places.
The contract for a new wooden draw,
using the present iron portions now in
place, will be let in two weeks. This fclll
again close up the Madison-street bridge
end throw the travel on to the Morrison
street bridge, but that cannot be helped.
The block pavement on this bridge seems
in good condition. However, there Is con
siderable shrinkage in the blocks, and
wedging is required, and the surface of
the West Side span Is a- little rough.

MADE A GREAT HIT.
The Venetian Lady Troubadours made a
tremendous hit last evening, and the gar
den was crowded to its capacity, not
withstanding the extreme heat and the
great counter attraction of the seaside
resorts. The programme presented was
ono of great artistic merit, and each num
"bfcr was -encored to the echo. Colonel Har
Xty has contracted with the Troubadours
to remain, fiver the grand carnival In Sep
tember. The costumes worn by the ladles
were elegant in the extreme. The ladles
will appear each evening and Wednesday
and Saturday matinees In an entire
change of programme and costumes. Too
much cannot be said in their praise,
and they are already established as
Portland favorites. 3Ir. Michelsen,.
the popular and refined banjoist, will
appear this evening ior -uic just
time, in conjunction wiin mo -xruuua-iioura.
Added to the grand attraction, is
