BESIDE THE SOBBING SEA
Tide of Travel Sets la Strong; at
North Beach Clatsop and New
port Feel the Impetus.
AT THE BEACH, July ZL There is no
cessation of the tide of Immigration to
the seaside. A steady stream of peo
ple best describes It, and the fact re
mains pre-emlent that the number of peo
ple at the beaches Is easily double that
of former seasons, at the same period.
During: several years past, one enter
tained no "worry about securing: a cot
tage, but this season it Is different. Thl
cottages at Long Beach are finding ten
ants rapidly, and In another -week Indi
cations are that they "will be at a pre
mium. Be it said to the credit of the weather
man that he fully appreciates the situ
ation and is providing choice climatic
conditions. If anything, the temperature
has been a trifle too warm the past
week, but better this than cold, sharp
winds. Camping out Is even more pleas
ant than living Indoors, as is well evi
denced by the fact that the tents at the
beach have multiplied manyfold over the
previous week. The several hotels are
enjoying a good trade. So far the travel
has been largely transient, but orders
for extended accommodations are pouring
in all around, and the opinion is freely
expressed by "mine host" that a high
tide will strike the hotel business the
coming week.
The Season. Socially.
The season is a disappointment, if one
expects large, formal social events. The
people have come to the beach for rest
and recreation, and seem to find It, in
strolling up and down, or driving along
the beach. Bathing Is the pastime most
generally engaged in. The tide-tables
are consulted many times tnrough the
day and not a few grow impatient for
bathing time to roll around. At Long
Beach, this week, an old custom was re
newedthat of ringing the "bathing
hour." A bell has been placed in a park,
and this gives official warning of the tjme
to take a plunge. The practice was orig
inated by Mr. Staker, who will be re
membered by all early frequenters of the
beach. For several years the custom has
been extinct, and Its resurrection calls to
mind pleasant memories of olden times.
An additional life-line has been installed
at Long Beach, and Its presence is high
ly appreciated by the ladles.
The season is not without Its pleasant
gatherings. Bonfires dot the beach in
many places almost every night, and are
enjoyed by lively crowds, who while
away the time by amusements too numer
ous to mention.
Huckleberries are ripe, and not a few
persons go berrying, finding it pleasant
pastime and, at the same time thereby in
suring a better-filled larder. The fishing
is excellent, and it is no trouble for an
amateur to develop into a fairly akilfull
angler.
Trip the Lia;ht Fantastic
There was a grand ball at Long Beach
Hall Monday evening. An overflowing
house well describes the attendance, and
the enjoyment was on a par with the
assemblage. The only drawback was the
scarcity of gentlemen, the ladles number
ing about three to one of the male sex.
At the Portland Hotel, private dances
are given very often. The participants
ore largely guests, as the entertainment
comes without notice.
The guests of the Tioga Hotel have
been treated to two muslcales within the
past week. Saturday evening a progress
ive whist party was scheduled. The
coming week the majority of the guests
will enjoy a cruise up the Nasel Biver
In Mr. J. M. Arthur's launch. The cruise
will last about three days. Fishing and
camping out will be the principal amuse
ments, and a royal good time is certain.
The -baseball fever has invaded the
beach. Wednesday the Long Beach and
the Seavlew nines crossed bats. The
score resulted 11 to 6, which speaks for an
Interesting game. There Is to be a re
turn game. The players are mostly all
people off for a -vacation. It Is now pro
posed to organize a beach team and play
a match game with the Astoria nine.
The meeting will come off at Long Beach.
The first message over the now "Western
Union telegraph line was sent from Long
Beach Wednesday. A 25-cent rate for 10
words has been establshed to Portland
and other points can be reached reason
ably. This improvement will be a great
convenience to the large army of people
who spend the Summer season at the
beaches, and have occasion to communi
cate with home or foreign points on
Jhort notice.
At Seavlew.
The population of Seavlew Increases
day by day. Several of its citizens made
calculations on an Increased migration
this season, and If one experiences any
difficulty In securing quarters up the
beach, they can be comfortably housed
at Seavlew, than which there is no pret
tier place on Long Beach. The head
quarters of the following-named people,
not otherwise mentioned, are there:
Mrs. T. J. Campbell, Mrs. M. M. Drake
and family (Crandall cottage), Mrs. N.
Poston and daughter, T. Poston, Mrs.
F. E. Deweney (Dewenoy cottage), E. J.
Richards and family (Benson cottage),
J. Costello and family (Richards cot
tage), Mrs. Will Pettlnger nd son
(Shehee cottage), B. Hagedorn and fam
ily (Durham cottage), Mrs. P. H. Neu and
family, Mrs. Finch and family, Mrs. M.
Dewey and family, Mrs. Dewey, Sr..
Mrs. Duncan, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. An
drews (all occupants of "Widows' Hall"),
and R. Marsch and family.
At Long: Beach.
There are very few vacant cottages at
Long Beach. While quite a number are
not occupied, for the most part they are
held at the disposal of their several own
AT THE
BEACHES
ers, who are due to arrive any day.
Among others, the following-named per
sons are making their Bummer home at
Long Beach:
E. J. Jeffrey and family, Mrs. G. E.
Hodson and family, Mrs. C. M. King and
family (Knowles cottage), Mrs. August
Prasll, Mrs. Q. M. Averlll (Trinkman cot
tage), W. H. Braden and familyC Not
tage cottage), J. B. Barnes and family
(Knowles cottage). Frank Steel and fam
ily, Mrs. C McCully and daughters, W.
A. Northrup and family, George Fer
nau and family, F. C Barnes and fam
ily, O. M. fiargent and family and Mrs.
George Gutman and family (Barkas cot
tage).
At Ocean Parle.
The pleasure-seekers at Ocean Park
have resolved that there shall be so
strangera in camp; that everybody shall
know everybody. On the arrival of a
train, any newcomer is picked out and
at once made acquainted with all bands.
As a result, no settlement on the beach
Is having more good, sound enjoyment.
The past week has been marked by huge
bonfires, almost nightly, and the attend
ance is general. The programme is im
promptu, but on each occasion the en
tertainment has been exceedingly Inter
esting. Fishing parties aro out each
day and meet with the best of success.
To enlarge their circle of acquaintance,
the Ocean ParkiteB are considering a
great clam-bake In the near future. An
Invitation Is to be extended to all the
residents between Nahcottah and Ilwaco,
and the train will likely be chartered. A
committee Is now in charge of the affair.
On Tuesday evening an entertainment
was given at Grove cottage In honor of
Temple Alexander by a party of young
people, who discussed the relative merits
of "Up-Jenklns," bonfires and pennche.
Refreshments were served from tete-a-tete
tables, placed among the trees, and
dancing was Indulged in until after mid
night. Among those present were: Mrs.
R E. Bybee, Miss Christina MacConneU,
Mrs. S. P. Hanawalt, Mrs. J. K. Gill,
Mrs. B- R. Relaford. Judge and Mrs.

AT CLATSOP BEACH.
Cnxnpera Already in Possession, and
Hotel Doors Opened.
Tenants have been found for all the cot
tages at Clatsop Beach, and are practical
ly all on the ground. The number of
campers Is far in excess of former years,
which, in part, accounts for the heavy
advent of people at the beach during tho
post week. They come in crowds of hun
dreds, and though tho seaeon opened
early, the rush Is remarkable. High
water mark will not be reached during
the month, however, and Just what it will
be Is awaited with surpriso and gratifica
tion. The general spirit of progress has not
yet caught the season, socially. The
woek has been a quiet ; one. Even bon
fires have been Infrequent. People are so
busy making at home their many friends
who arrive almoet dally, that they have
little time to contrive other more definite
amusements. Acquaintances will shortly
come, however, and then some enjoyable
gatherings are sure to result.
The weather during the week has been
of the finest order imaginable. True, it
was quite highly tempered for the Coast,
but one could not term Jt uncomfortable;
there Is no fault to find with beach llfo
In any particular. Bathing is ever good,
but was made more pleasant the past
fteek by reason of the slightly Increased
temperature of the water. The tides did
not servo so well for the digging of
clams and catching of crabs as the week
before.
The railroad company has provided ex
cellent accommodations for patrons of
tho beach, and the heavy travel In this
direction proves that their efforts are
appreciated. The hotel-keepers are better
prepared than ever to care for the trav
eler, and a visit to Clatsop was never so
fraught with .pleasure and contentment as
this season.
