Kangaroo for "vtt?, Cordrat. Manager
Cordray yesterday received the encourag
ing news from Nance O'Nell, who Is about
to sail frcm Australia, that she "has pur
chased a kangaroo, and Is going to bring
It to him as a token of remembrance. Mr.
Cordray has never had a kangaroo, but
he will be very glad to get this one, and
will put It on exhibition for the benefit
of the patrons of his theater. He is even
thinking of putting a company on the
road now, for the kangaroo could make
the long Jumps and thus save the heaviest
Item of expense. The animal will arrive
In Portland some time this Summer, and
Mr. Cordray will pasture it on his lawn
on East Burnside street temporarily. He
Is not sure Just what It ought to eat,
but 'will feed It everything he can think
of till it develops a liking for some par
ticular viand.
And Watch This Swindle. Suburban
housekeepers tre warned against bogus
sewing machine agents who go from hous
to house, representing themselves as being
connected with reputable firms, while In
reality they are only botches. A Mrs.
Platts, of Cycle Park, admitted one of
these "agents" to her house last week,
and he charged her $1 50 for "fixing" her
machine so that It refused to work after
he had departed. She then sent to the
proper agency, and paid ?1 more before
the machine could resume Its proper func
tions. The agency in the city denies all
connection with the bogus repairer, and
denounces him as a fraud.
Petition for Trolley Line. A number
of residents of Montavllla have signed a
petition, which -was filed In the County
Court yesterday, asking that right of way
be granted to the City & Suburban Rail
way Company to extend its line along Hlb
bard street from East Ankeny street to
the Base Line road. It Is stated that the
extension will be an accommodation to
the residents of Montavllla, and that the
company has expressed a willingness to
build It.
Enjoyable Music. Tne enjoyable musi
cal programmes prepared by the Wilder
quartet for the clergy banquet Thursday
night, and again at the reception at the
Portland Hotel In honor of Monslgnore
Martlnelll and Archbishop Chr.stle, have
been pleasantly commented upon. On the
latter occasion the selections were con
sidered particularly happy and appropriate
ones, several "Ave Marias" being ren
dered. Fell From a Car. A resident of Upper
Alblna named Williams fell off the rear
platform of a north-bound street-car at
Third, near Alder, last evening, and
struck the pavement heavily with his
head. He had boarded the car with his
arms loaded with bundles, and In some
way lost his balance. He was placed on
a northbound car and sent home a few
minutes later.
