FROM THE NOTEBOOK. i
i
Robert Goddard, a cousin of the
shoe man, has returned from a trip
East. Mr. Goddard had recently
undergone an operation for appen
dices, and his trip was intended as
a surprise to his mother, whom he had
not seen for eight years. On arriving at
SL Paul he found a telegram awaiting
him, announcing her death. The sad news
greatly affected the young man's health,
which was not the beet at the time of
his leaving here. While in Chicago, Mr.
Goddard went to several of the most skill
ful physicians, and now comes back with
the intention of being operated on for a
tumor of the stomach.
Mrs. Ann Jackson, familiarly known
as " Grandma " Jackson, died early
yesterday roornlne at her residence,
on Thirteenth street, between lam
hill and Taylor. Although she had
been ailing for nearly a year, she took to
her bed less than two weeks ago. Mrs.
Jackson was born in Long Island, N. T.,
In Ifill. and lived there for over 40 years.
In 1E52 she came to Oregon, settling at
The Dalles, and about 25 years later she
came to Portland, where she has slnco
made her home. Deceased was married in
New York City, In 1S25, to the late Jona
than Jackson, and two children survive
her Mrs. P. M. Dekum, widow of the
late Frank Dekum, and Albert Jackson,
the well-known marine engineer. The fu
neral will take place tomorrow morn
ing from her late residence, and the re
mains will ie interred in Lone Fir Ceme
tery. The sermon will be preached by
Rev. W. S. Gilbert, of the Calvary Pres
byterian Church.
Tomorrow Mrs. Pratt, the librarian
of the Portland Public Library. In
the City Hall, will commence a
canvass to get funds for tho cup
port of the Library. Tho current ex
penses have always been met by monthly
subscriptions, ranging from 50 cents a
month up, and It is hoped by the manage
ment that the number of such subscrip
tions can be increased so as to obtain
a corresponding increase of usefulness
from the Library. Slnco last October, o er
5700 has been spent on new books, mag
azines and newspapers. Thia amount came
from nine persons, and has furnished read
ing of the best sort for a daily average
of 75 visitors. If a la'xe number of the
monthly subscriptions referred to are ob
tained, more books can be added from
time to time, and the Library can allow
books to be taken home instead of com
pelling the readers to use them only in its
rooms.
Father P. C. Yorko will lecture thl3
evening in the Cathedral, to tho general
public io admission will be charged. All
who are interested In the well-know n ora
tor will have this opportunity of hearing
him.
