HOW A CAT FALLS.
Experiment to Determine "Why It Al
ways Lands on Its Feet.
Mature prints a series of photographs of
a. tumbling cat, taken by JL Marey with
the view of determining the mechanical
conditions which enable the animal to
alight on its feet. The process of falling
is represented in 13 phases, from the time
it leaves the hands of the demonstrator
at the top of the wall until it reaches the
earth and walks away; while side and end
views are given of each series.
The cat was held by Its feet and let go
in that position; and in the first five
phases scarcely any perceptible change in
position Is shown. But from the sixth up
to the final one. there is a variation in
each, the animal gradually coming over
with its feet downward. M. Marey, from
his observation and study of the photo
graphs, believes'th'at It is the inertia of
its own mass that the cat uses to right
itself. The torsion couple which produces
the action of the muscles of the vertebrae
acts at first on the forelegs, which have
a very small motion of Inertia on account
of the front 'feet being foreshortened and
pressed against the neck.
The hind legs, however, being stretched
out and almost perpendicular to the axis
of the body, possess a moment of inertia
which opposes motion in the opposite di
rection to tfeat which the torsion couple
tends to puroduce. In the second phase
of the action, the attitude of the feet is re
versed; and it is the inertia of the fore
part that furnishes a fulcrum for the ro
tation of the rear.

for breaking a window in a fit of temper.
"This, my child," said the father, "is
wickedness." "No, papa," replied the
child, reprovingly, "it is hereditary."
