Biden Hosts Juneteenth Concert
President Joe Biden celebrated the June-
teenth holiday early with a Monday con-
cert on the White House South Lawn with
singers including Gladys Knight and Patti
LaBelle. “Black history is American histo-
ry,” Biden told the crowd. The Democratic
president warned that some “old ghosts” in
new clothes — a veiled reference to some
of his Republican rivals — seek to take
away their freedoms by making it harder
for Black Americans to vote.
Waste and Recycling Workers Week
Waste and Recycling Workers Week begun
June 17. The annual week of recognition is
celebrated across the nation to raise aware-
ness of the essential garbage and recy-
cling profession. Keeping greater Portland
healthy and clean isn’t easy work. Garbage
and recycling workers regularly handle
hazardous materials, heavy equipment and
other potentially harmful items. “This is
a special occasion to honor the essential
workers who play a vital role in protect-
ing people and the environment in greater
Portland,” said Metro Waste Prevention
and Environmental Services Director Mar-
ta McGuire, PhD. “Throughout the week,
please consider taking a moment to thank
your local garbage and recycling workers.”

located outside the lower baggage claim
area, near the entrance of the MAX station.
MAX Red Line trains will return to regular
service on Saturday, June 22.
Montavilla Pool will open later this sum-

During this delayed opening period, Mon-
tavilla Pool staff and customers who have
signed up for programs (swim lessons,
summer swim team activities, etc.) will
be temporarily moved to the East Portland
Community Center (EPCC) pool. Regis-
trants were offered a full refund if EPCC
didn’t fit families’ swim plans.

Beginning June 16 through Friday, June
21, MAX Red Line service will be disrupt-

the start of service every morning during
the six-day project. Disrupted service will
only take place at night and the early morn-
PacifiCorp to Pay Oregon
Wildfire Victims
Pacific Power, part of PacifiCorp, said
Monday it has agreed to a $178 million
settlement with over 400 Oregon plaintiffs
in the latest multimillion-dollar payout
related to the deadly 2020 wildfires that
ravaged the state. The majority of the 403
plaintiffs in the settlement Monday were
affected by the Echo Mountain Complex
Fire that devastated Oregon’s central coast,
said George McCoy, one of the plaintiffs’
attorneys, while others were impacted by
the Santiam Fire that raged east of the state
capital Salem in northwestern Oregon.
