Appointment Confirmed
Jan. 11 - The U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of Oregon Child
Welfare Director Rebecca Jones Gaston to Commissioner of the Ad-
ministration of Children, Youth, and Families (ACYF) in the U.S. De-
partment of Health and Human Services. The ACYF oversees federal
programs that support social services that promote the positive growth
and development of children, youth and their families; protective ser-
vices and shelter for children and youth in at-risk situations; and adop-
tion for children with special needs.

Jan. 11 - Nicole Morrisey O’Don-
nell made history on January 4th
as she was sworn in as the first
female Multnomah County sheriff
in the agency’s 168-year history,
according to the sheriff’s office.
Morrisey O’Donnell succeeds
former Sheriff Mike Reese, who
could not seek reelection because
of term limits.
Jan. 25 - Bill Schonely, the
longtime Portland Trail Blaz-
ers broadcaster who coined
the phrase “Rip City” passed
on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023. He
was 93.

Tyre Nichols Death
Feb. 8 - The NAACP and Portland leaders held a vigil for Tyre Nichols,
who died after being brutally beaten by Memphis police officers. Nich-
ols was just 29 when he died. Video of police beating and kicking him
was released and protests around the country began.
