Inferno Ravages the Roseway
Theater
Aug. 17 - Fire shuts down local entertainment for community
in Portland. Just before 6:00am on Saturday morning of Aug.
6, 2022, Portland firefighters were summoned to a three-alarm
fire at the nearly decade-old Roseway Theater on Northeast
Sandy Boulevard. Although the smokejumpers were eventu-
ally able to defeat the blaze, the impact it has left on the build-
ing has caused uncertainty due its appearance.
Star Trek Actress
Passes at 89
Aug. 3 - Nichelle Nichols, who broke barri-
ers for Black women in Hollywood as com-
munications officer Lt. Uhura on the original
“Star Trek” television series died July 30,
2022 in Silver City, New Mexico. Her role
in the 1966-69 series earned Nichols a life-
long position of honor with the series’ rabid
fans, known as Trekkers and Trekkies.
Justice Finally for Ahmaud Arbery
Aug. 17 - The white father and son who chased and killed Ahmaud
Arbery in a Georgia neighborhood each received a second life prison
sentence for committing federal hate crimes, months after getting their
first for murder at a hearing that brought a close to more than two years
of criminal proceedings.

grand jury ordered Walmart
to pay $4.4 million in dam-
ages to a man who sued the
store, saying he was racial-
ly profiled and harassed by
a Walmart employee. In a
lawsuit filed against the re-
tail giant last year, Michael
Mangum alleges that he was
followed around a Walmart at
a Portland, Oregon, area store
in 2020.
Sept. 7 - One student
killed and two others
were injured in column
collapse on campus. A
brick column fell inward
causing it to collapse at
Lewis & Clark College
in Southwest Portland
killing a 19 year old male
student and injuring two
18 year old women. The
college confirmed all
three were students.
