Chapter NAACP Presi-
dent Fights for Justice
Jan. 12 - In her first year as president of the
Vancouver NAACP, Jasmine Tolbert has
taken the fight against racial injustice to a
new level. The civil rights group recently
joined in a lawsuit to reign in excessive
force and discriminatory policing in Van-
couver and Clark County.
Allen Temple Returns Home
Feb. 23 - Rev. Dr. LeRoy Haynes of the historic African American congregation Allen Temple CMC Church led a Feb. 6 worship ser-
vice. The refurbished 100 year old church at 4236 N.E. Eighth Ave. celebrated its first grand opening on Feb. 28 since electrical fires
in 2015 caused major damage.
Displacement of Black Families Addressed
Feb. 23 - Historic displacement of Black families addressed. Photo from 1973 of Black
residents protesting the forced demolition of neighborhood homes to make room for
urban redevelopment and the expansion of Emanuel Hospital in north Portland. Nearly
50 years later, a new effort calls for the city to make restitution to Black families who
were impacted.
Community Leaders Honored for Dedication
Mar. 9 - The Oregon Commission for Women honored Black community member and
activist Karol Collymore and Sen. Ginney Burdick of southeast Portland for their long-
time dedication to improving the lives of women and girls.

Mar. 9 - A new program to empower Black youth and eradicate racism is introduced at
the newly designated Soul Restoration Center, the former Albina Arts Center on North-
east Killingsworth and Williams Avenue
April 6 - City Commissioner Jo Ann Hard-

Gordly by sponsoring a resolution before
the Portland City Council proclaiming
March 30th as Avel Gordly Day.
PCC Selects New
President
April 6 - Adrien Bennings named presi-
dent of Portland Community College. She
left her position as president of Kellogg
Community College in Michigan to be-
come PCC’s first permanent woman pres-
ident in July.
