Bill Russell, Former center for the Boston Celtics
NBA legend Bill Russell dies at 88
Bill Russell, NBA Legend
who is a part of the Boston Celt-
ics dynasty that won 11 champi-
onships, has passed away at 88.
Russell became the first Black
player to be inducted into the
Naismith Memorial Basket-
ball Hall of Fame in 1975, and
in 1980 he was voted Greatest
Player in the History of the NBA
by the Professional Basketball
Writers Association of America.
He had one of the most re-
markable careers of any player
in the history of basketball and
team sports. Russell was a five-
time MVP, 12-time All-Star and
a two-time All-American. He
led his teams to win two straight
NCAA championships and 55
consecutive wins. In 1956, Rus-
sell also won a gold medal at the
Summer Olympics.
According to a family state-
ment from his verified Twitter
account Russell passed away
peacefully with his wife Jean-
nine by his side. Arrangements
for his memorial service will be
announced soon.

Team welcome
new player to
the WBB 2022-
23 Season
The Portland State women's
basketball team announced that
Sofia Llanos will be added to their
2022-23 roster. Llanos, a 5-11
guard/forward from Tarragona,
Spain, comes to the Vikings after
playing her freshman season at
Marshall University in West Vir-
ginia.. She debuted in the third-tier
national league at 15 years old and
then moved up to the second-tier
national league at 17.
"Sofia brings college and in-
ternational experience at the
small forward position," head
coach Chelsey Gregg said of
Llanos. "She can stretch the
floor with her shooting ability,
and her length will be a great as-
set on the defensive end. A good
student, high-character play-
er that will fit in well with our
women's basketball culture here
at Portland State."
Despite not playing much at
Marshall, Llanos was named to
the Conference USA Commis-
sioner's Honor Roll while also
being named a Conference USA
Academic Medalist with a GPA of
3.75 or better..
