Portland Parks & Recreation
(PP&R) is hiring for hundreds of
full-time and part-time jobs in the
areas of recreation, urban forestry
and land stewardship. Summer
camp staff and lifeguards, swim
instructors, and water fitness in-
structors are especially needed.
Many of the city’s park and rec-
reation workers begin as part-time
workers and go on to establish sat-
isfying, full-time careers with the
city, officials said.
Bureau spokesperson Mark
Ross said the jobs are a reward-
ing way to serve the public while
earning extra cash or starting a full
time career.
“Portland Parks & Recreation
offers an inclusive, welcoming

flexible hours, outstanding team-

he said.
The need for more staff is clear.
At this time, PP&R is well below
its desired capacity in the Aquatics
department – the bureau has around
115 swim instructors, lifeguards,
and water fitness instructors com-
bined; full staffing for the busy
summer season is 750+ employees.
Funds from the Parks Local
Option Levy PP&R to restart pro-
gramming like summer camps and
reopen community centers and
pools. Levy funds have also al-
lowed PP&R to waive the fees for
the lifeguard training course and
certification which in the past has
been a big barrier for those who
cannot afford it.

Welcomes New Principal
St. Andrew Nativity School, a
diverse private middle school for
low income students located just
off Northeast Ninth Avenue and
Alberta Street, is introducing its
new principal to the community
after her recent hiring.
Rosemarie El Youssef has en-
joyed a long career as an educator
beginning as an English teacher at
Wilson High School in 2001. She
later taught language arts, leader-
ship, and AVID (Advancement Via
Individual Determination) at H. B.
Lee Middle School in the Reyn-
olds School District. She current-
ly is the principal at St. Therese
Catholic Elementary School in
northeast Portland where her three
sons have attended over the years.
