Black executive on
making a difference
From the housing projects to the president of
a major cable corporation, Steve White’s life has
been an extraordinary journey. The Black exec-
utive in charge of all Comcast Cable operations
in the Western U.S., shares lessons from every
stage of life in his upcoming book Uncompro-
mising: How an Unwavering Commitment to
Your Why Leads to an Impactful Life and a Last-
ing Legacy.
As one of four boys raised by a single moth-
er, life could have taken a different path. Instead,
armed with his mother’s faith and determination
that her sons make a better life for themselves and
his own refusal to be shaped by his circumstanc-
es, White forged a path to remarkable success.
His overarching message: An uncompromis-
ing life is one where you stay true to what is
important to you, what you believe in, and what
you love. This leads to more fulfillment, purpose
and a lasting legacy.
White’s hard-won insights help others find their
fight—pursuing what matters most and discover-
ing where they can make the biggest difference.

Awards Slated
Samuel L. Jackson
Actor Samuel L. Jackson will
receive the Chairman’s Award
during the 53rd NAACP Image
Awards Saturday.
With the award, the 73-year-old
actor is recognized as an individ-
ual who demonstrates exemplary
public service and uses his plat-
form to create agents of change.
“Many might not know that
prior to his acting career, Jackson
was a staunch activist during the
Civil Rights Movement in the
1960s, even serving as an ush-
er at Martin Luther King Jr.’s
funeral,” said Leon W. Russell,
chairman of the NAACP nation-
al board of directors.
Previous recipients have in-
cluded Tyler Perry, then-Sen.
Barack Obama, Danny Glover,
U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters and the
late U.S. Rep. John Lewis.
Jackson, who has appeared in
more than 100 films, is known for
his portrayal of Jules in Quentin
Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” and
as Gator Purify in Spike Lee’s
“Jungle Fever.” He has starred in
several other films such as “Do
the Right Thing,” “Unbreakable,”
“Snakes on a Plane” and multi-
ple Marvel films including “The
Avengers” and “Captain America:
The Winter Solider.”
Growing up in the West Indies in a small village called
Hopetown, Secota Douglas lived a life filled with
just that — hope. It sparked an ambition to
make an impact in her native home even
as she planted roots in the U.S.
And to gain the necessary
knowledge to help shape
environmental policy, Secota
earned her degree online from
Oregon State University Ecampus.
“I always had dreams that were
bigger than my surroundings,” she
said. “Earning a degree has always
been one of them.”
