Hope Center to Double Capacity
Donation supports site
A donation from MacKenzie
Scott, the former wife of Amazon
founder Jeff Bezos, will support
Portland’s houseless community
with a grant of $1.2 million going
to the Bybee Lakes Hope Center
via the United Way of the Colum-
bia-Willamette charity.
The contribution will double
the capacity of the transitional
housing facility in north Portland,
from 126 to 318 beds. The for-
mer and never used Wapato jail
was purchased from the county
by Portland business leader Jor-
dan Schnitzer and is currently run
by the Oregon nonprofit Helping
Hands Reentry Outreach Centers.
United Way of the Columbia-Willamette is announcing a $1.2
million donation to the Bybee Lakes Hope Center, a transitional
housing facility in north Portland that moved into the former and
unused Wapato Jail in 2020, supporting Portland’s houseless
community.
Deputies Cleared in Fatal Shooting
(AP) — Authorities have con-
cluded that the fatal shooting of
Kevin Peterson Jr., a Black man
killed by Clark County sheriff’s
deputies in Vancouver’s Hazel
Dell neighborhood during an un-
dercover drug investigation, was
“justified and lawful.”
Mary Robnett, the prosecut-
ing attorney in adjoining Pierce
County, reviewed the case for
criminal charges, finding Pe-
terson was armed when he fled Kevin Peterson Jr.
his car, retrieved a weapon after
dropping it despite police com-
mands to leave it, and pointed it
at police.
Peterson’s family members de-
nounced Robnett’s conclusion in a
statement through their attorney,
Mark Lindquist.
Anderson and Deputies Jon-
athan Feller and Jeremy Brown
fired a total of 34 rounds, strik-
ing Peterson four times, investi-
gators said.
