Boone said most emergency
calls to Portland Fire & Rescue
are concerning chronic health is-
sues, mental health issues and
substance use disorders.
“So that is a big area where first
responders have to identify what
is the right need and then what
is the appropriate resource,” she
said. “And it’s not the emergency
room, because it’s not life threat-
ening, but it’s how you navigate
the health care system. And so
that’s where I think of Dr. King
and his message, that you have to
think of others first.”
