Ural Thomas 80th Birthday Party
Historic concert to honor Portland music legend
Ural Thomas, a pillar of Port-
land soul and the acclaimed R&B
funkmaster who has shared stag-
es with the likes of Otis Redding
and James Brown, is celebrating
his 80th birthday with a special
concert on Saturday, Dec. 21 at
Revolution Hall, the former Wash-
ington High School in southeast
Portland.
Presented by the Albina Music
Trust and Cooky Parker, and pro-
duced by Portland’s World Arts
Foundation, the historic birth-
day party production will feature
Thomas and his current group,
Ural Thomas & the Pain; singer,
songwriter and producer Nick Wa-
terhouse; rapper Covi; and come-

Paul Knauls Sr. and Calvin
Walker will serve as masters of

land’s definitive soul music revue,
the Cotton Club. He played an
integral role in Thomas’ early ca-
reer and now, over 50 years later,
their friendship and shared history
endure. In the late 1960s, Walker
was one of Ural Thomas’ many
soul music pupils at Thomas’
House of Entertainment.
Tickets for the all-ages 8 p.m.
show are $20 in advance and $25
