Escape From
Eagle Creek
A new documentary about the massive 2017 Ea-
gle Creek Wildfire in the Columbia River Gorge is
receiving its red carpet premiere and some deserv-
ing recognition.
The short film produced by University of Oregon
media graduate students, including Danny Peterson,
a Portland Observer reporter for the past two years
who recently accepted a new reporting job at KOIN,
will premiere at Clinton Street Theater, 2522 S.E.
Clinton St. on Sunday, Sept 22 at 6 p.m.
“Escape from Eagle Creek” shows how a hike
in one of Oregon’s most beautiful destinations be-
comes a life or death scenario for 150 people who
are blocked from exiting due to the wildfire.
With interviews from survivors who became their
own rescuers, the documentary features videos and
photos from the hike, as well as testimony from the
hikers of the harrowing experience that changed
their lives.
The film was accepted at this month’s Oregon
Independent Film Festival for Best Environmental
Documentary. It was named Best of the Northwest
from the Alliance for Community Media and won an
Emerging Talent award from the Alaska Internation-
al Film Awards.
