The Hollywood Theater in
northeast Portland presents the
film “Rafiki,” a hip tale of first
love between two young wom-
en in Nairobi, Kenya, a country
that still criminalizes homosex-
uality. The screening takes place
on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30
p.m. as part of the theater’s Queer
Commons series.
Bursting with the colorful street
style and music of Nairobi’s vi-
brant youth culture, “Rafiki”cen-
ters on Kena and Ziki, two young
women who have long been told
that “good Kenyan girls become
good Kenyan wives” -- but they
yearn for something more.
Despite a political rivalry be-
tween their families, the girls en-
courage each other to pursue their
dreams in a conservative society.
When love blossoms between
them, they must choose between
happiness and safety.
Initially banned in Kenya for
its positive portrayal of queer ro-
mance, Rafiki won a landmark
supreme court case chipping away
at Kenyan anti-LGBT legisla-
tion. The film features a remark-
able performance by newcomers
Samantha Mugatsia and Sheila
Munyiva.
