Cannon’s, tasty food and
friendly neighborhood atmosphere.
The legendary Memphis re-
cord label Stax produced a benefit
concert in 1972 at the Los Ange-
les Memorial Coliseum for the
residents of the largely African
American Watts neighborhood,
which had undergone intense tu-
mult during the anti-police riots
of 1965.
The Northwest Film Center is
presenting an encore screening of
the 1973 classic “Wattstax” which
showcases the performances of
Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers,
Carla and Rufus Thomas, the Bar-
Kays, Luther Ingram, Richard Pry-
or and many others. But Mel Stuart’s
portrait of the people and places of
Watts is equally compelling.
Using extensive footage shot
during the massively attended
concert and on the streets of the
city, the documentary’s entertain-
ment value is high, but the beauty,
strength, and fortitude of the peo-
ple shine through just as brightly.
“Wattstax” shows Monday,
Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. in Whitsell Au-
ditorium at the Portland Art Mu-
seum, 1219 S.W. Park Ave. Ad-
mission is $9 general and $8 for
students and seniors. For more
information, visit nwfilm.org.
