Another Heat Wave Hits
An excessive heat warning was
issued by the National Weather
Service Tuesday for the Portland
area for the second time this sum-
mer with temperatures forecast to
approach 100 degrees on Wednes-
day and Thursday before lower
temperatures bring some relief by
the weekend.
Washington County Public
Health is reminding people to take
precautions over the next few days
to avoid heat-related illnesses,
such as heat cramps, heat stroke
and heat exhaustion.
The most vulnerable individu-
als are those who work or exercise
outdoors, older adults, infants,
children under four, people with
chronic medical conditions, and
those experiencing homelessness.

Three religious leaders were arrested at the Port-
land Immigration and Customs Enforcement facil-
ity Tuesday as they demanded the release of immi-
grant detainees. The clergy and followers with the
Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice began
the protest from nearby Elizabeth Caruthers Park.
Those arrested were identified as Rev. Michael El-
lick, Rev. Barbara Nixon and Rabbi Debra Kolodny.
Police said they followed a man
to a north Portland home Mon-
day after he attempted to assault
an officer and drive away in a
green Pontiac while dragging the
officer down the road. The man,
identified as Antyone V. Ojerino-
la, 36, was at first suspected of
selling drugs near Northwest 8th Avenue and North-
west Glisan Street.

A federal judge on Friday ruled that the Trump ad-
ministration must fully restore DACA, a program
that protects from deportation some young immi-
grants who were brought to the United States ille-
gally as children, including accepting new applica-
tions for the program. However, the administration
has until Aug.23 to appeal the decision.

behavior. Menendez wrote in a tweet Monday that

criticized James on Friday after an interview aired
with CNN anchor Don Lemon in which he deemed
Trump divisive.

final decision rests with the West Hollywood Cham-
ber of Commerce.

Emission Standards Defended
Oregon’s U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley
last week joined their colleagues in introducing a
resolution to protect states’ rights to set their own
fuel and greenhouse gas emission standards.“While
the Trump administration flippantly ignores the
clear dangers of climate change, states like Oregon
are leading the way with bold action to ensure an
efficient, low-carbon energy future,” Wyden said.
Vancouver Wants New Bridge
On Monday, Vancouver City Council unanimous-
ly adopted a resolution in support of an Interstate
5 bridge replacement project that includes high-ca-
pacity transit. The resolution urges Washington
State Governor Jay Inslee
and the Washington State
Legislature to provide
funding to the Washington
State Department of Trans-
portation to advance the
bridge replacement project.
