Police Shoot Man with Hatchet
Gresham police said two of its officers fa-
tally shot a man who threatened them with
a hatchet early Friday following a police
chase and crash of the suspect’s vehicle.
The man who died at the scene was identi-
fied as Dmitri Bullard, 24.
Assessed $36 million for Gorge Fire
A Vancouver teenager playing with fire-
works who started a fire that swept through
the Columbia River Gorge last summer
was ordered to pay over $36 million in
damages Monday, but because he is a juve-
nile the judge will allow payments to stop
after 10 years if he completes probation,
doesn’t commit other offenses and com-
plies with payment plans.
Former Chief was Dishonest
Former Portland Police Chief Larry
O’Dea’s should lose his police certification
for 10 years for dishonesty and three years
for gross misconduct, a state police policy
committee recommended Thursday. The
actions follow the investigation of O’Dea’s
handling of an off-duty accidental shooting
of his friend in 2016 and an employee’s dis-
crimination complaint against a co-worker.
College Closing After 125 Years
Marylhurst University, a 125-year-old col-
lege based near Lake Oswego, announced
Thursday it was closing because of de-
clining enrollment. The oldest Catholic

Paul Allen Backs Gun Control
Blazers and Seahawks owner Paul Allen
indicated Monday that he is backing a
Washington gun control ballot initiative
with a $1 million contribution. Initiative
1639 would raise the age to purchase auto-
matic weapons to 21 while also creating an
enhanced background check system. Allen
tweeted the proposed law is a necessary
and reasonable one.
Illicit Marijuana Targeted
The illicit marijuana market, organized
crime, outlaw grows and operations that
“pose a substantial risk of violence” will be
targeted by federal prosecutors under new
guidelines for cannabis enforcement in Or-
egon made public Friday. Billy Williams,
the U.S. attorney for Oregon. The guide-
lines come in response to Attorney General
Jeff Sessions’ decision to scrap Obama-era
policies.
