Gingerbread Adventures You’re invited to get into the holiday spirit by viewing some amazing gingerbread houses during Gingerbread Adventures at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Five local architecture firms and bakeries have teamed up to design and build gingerbread sculptures focused on the theme “Illusions.” Gingerbread Adventures, spon- sored by New Seasons, highlights the innovation and food science that goes into assembling elaborate gingerbread sculptures. The cre- ations showcase Portland’s diverse cultural experience, innovative food scene, and architectural expertise. “Last year was so much fun and everyone really enjoyed it – the bakers, the architects, our guests and even our staff! Gingerbread Adventures is a great way to blend food science with a beloved holi- day tradition,” said Andrea Edge- combe, OMSI events director. “We are excited for this to become an event families look forward to year after year.” Gingerbread Adventures is in- cluded with general admission to the museum and will be on view in the OMSI Auditorium through Jan. 1. Gray Whales on the Move Watching week activities begin Dec. 27 Gray whales are on the move south again this winter, and the Oregon Parks and Recreation De- partment is celebrating the annual event with Whale Watching Week, Dec. 27-31. Visitors to the Oregon coast will have the opportunity to glimpse some of the estimat- ed 20,000 gray whales traveling south from Alaska to their final destination off the coast of Baja, Mexico. Volunteers from the Whale Watching Spoken Here program will be stationed at 24 sites along the Oregon coast during the event. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, they’ll offer whale watching tips and facts about the animals. Each year from December to mid-Janu- ary, gray whales swim 6,000 miles down the Pacific coast to reach calving lagoons near the Baja pen- insula. Luke Parsons, an OPRD rang- er with the Whale Watching Cen- ter in Depoe Bay, says one of the goals of the event is to create awareness and compassion for whales and other marine life. A map of the 24 volunteer whale watch sites can be found on whalespoken.wordpress.com.
