September 21, 2016 Page 11 Arts & ENTERTAINMENT Concert to End Gun Violence Portland’s own Norman Sylvester will perform on stage with other mu- sicians Sunday, Sept. 25 for the Con- cert Across America to End Gun Vi- olence. The local event is being held from noon to 6 p.m. at Pioneer Court- house Square, downtown, in conjunc- tion with a concert in Brooklyn, N.Y. Sept. 25 was designated by Con- gress as a day of remembrance for murder victims. Ceasefire of Oregon and other advocates for reducing gun violence will use this day to remind our elected officials to do more to keep guns out of the hands of dan- gerous people. The event will give a face to the 11,000 Americans who are murdered with a firearm each year, and the 20,000 others who die from gunshot suicides and unintentional shootings. “Our goal is to give Portlanders a chance to voice their thoughts about gun violence and to share with peo- ple the many ways we can cut gun violence through education and legis- lation,” Ceasefire officials said. “We also will provide information about suicide prevention.” About one person dies every day in Oregon from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
