A National Landmark
C ontinued froM P age 9
hood in the 1960s and just be-
ginning to feel the Civil Rights
Movement’s arrival in Portland,
the congregation must have felt
the weight of King’s words.
The church’s principal role in
the local civil rights movement
was highlighted by hosting and
supporting numerous communi-
ty rallies, social programs and
town hall meetings for social
change.
Alongside the rest of the Eliot
neighborhood, the church saw
most of its community displaced
over the next decade, and today
its congregation is a fraction of
its old size. Now flanked by re-
development along Vancouver
and Williams Avenue, its contin-
ued existence is under constant
threat.
Today, the church has an ac-
tive membership of 400 and is
under the spiritual leadership of
the Rev. J.W. Matt Hennessee.
