Librarian Makes History
The urban natural around us is the showcase for the annual Columbia Slough Regatta, returning
Sunday, Aug. 7 to the waterways and passages that parallel the Columbia River in north and north-
east Portland.
Paddle Away, Regatta Returns
Bringing family and friends
together to enjoy the urban na-
ture around us, the Columbia
Slough Regatta returns for its
22nd year.
The upcoming celebration by
the Columbia Slough Watershed
Council isn’t a race but rather a
showcase of our forgotten wa-
terways and passages. For both
beginning and expert paddlers
alike, the regatta follows the flat
water sloughs of north and north-
east Portland, showcasing the bits
of nature in between industrial-
ized areas. Participants can enjoy
bald eagles, blue herons, salmon
and otters in their natural habitat
while getting hands on experi-
ence with paddling and nature.
Improvement projects made to
the Columbia Slough following
the Clean Water Act has made the
waterway the cleanest it’s been in
years, limiting pollutants and in-
creasing fish and plant life.
The regatta comes with com-
plimentary refreshments and
t-shirts available while supplies
last. The event runs Sunday, Aug.
7 from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. and is free,
though an $8 per person or $25
per family donation is suggested.

Obama signed a law last year
establishing a 10-year term for
the Librarian of Congress with
