First Class of Childbirth Educators
The International Center for
Traditional Childbearing in Port-
land has graduated the irst cohort
of African American Childbirth
Educators.
The graduates are Meies Matz,
Sheryl Paul, Dianne Clay and Eli-
ya Matz who are now qualiied
to facilitate and teach childbirth
education and baby care classes.
Meies and Eliya Matz are also
qualiied as peer breastfeeding
counselors.
The training was the accumu-
lation of a six-month pilot proj-
ect funded by Kaiser Permanente
Northwest to address the shortage
of African American Childbirth
Educators in Oregon.
Several research studies have
found that black communities
seek information on the mechan-
ics of labor and birth, infant care,
stress management and return-
ing back to work, from cultural-
ly competent, community-based
healthcare providers.
The ICTC offers “Childbirth
Education and Baby Prep” classes
to reduce barriers, improve birth
outcomes and celebrate the Afri-
can American family.

TOYOTA
Scion iA
The Scion iA has daring looks
and a long list of amenities that
make it hard to call it basic trans-
portation. A low-speed pre-colli-
sion safety system, Bluetooth con-
nectivity, and seven-inch touch
screen infotainment make the iA
a well-equipped choice for a new
car in 2016.
The iA wins praise as a far
better drive than anything Toyota
would have built to take its place.
A strong value, just about every
feature comes standard. The iA has
engaging handling for its class;
a reined interior; and high fuel
economy. Its small rear passenger
space, however, may compromise
comfort for taller passengers.
Under the hood of the 2016
Scion iA is a 1.5-liter four-cyl-
inder engine that produces 106
horsepower and 103 pound-feet of
torque. Power is sent to the front
wheels through a standard six-
speed manual transmission, with
a six-speed automatic available at
extra cost.
The EPA estimates fuel econ-
omy at 37 mpg combined (33
city/42 highway) for the auto-
matic and 35 mpg combined (31
city/41 highway) for the manual.
These igures are on the high end
for its class.
Manufacturer’s suggested retail
price $17,595.
