In 1989, Joyce Washington purchased the Portland Observer, a northeast Portland weekly serving diverse
communities. The paper’s corporate name, Cory Publishing commemorates Cory Washington (right)
one of the irst and most-involved staff members of the paper. Joyce Washington studied sociology at
Portland Community College and Portland State University. She passed in March 1996 but her legacy
lives on through the newspaper. Today, Mark and Rakeem Washington oversee the daily operations and
publication of the paper and are heavily involved in supporting the youth of Portland.
