America’s desire for trade with
China is older than Independence,
yet in 1882 the nation’s borders
shut for the first time to exclude
Chinese workers. A long and bit-
ter contest over immigration and
citizenship ensued, influenced by
tensions within the United States
and the changing tenor of relations
between the two countries.
This struggle over freedom and
the right to belong shaped the Chi-
nese American experience and the
very formation of American soci-
ety. It is a story of extraordinary
individuals, fearful and coura-
geous acts, and unexpected twists
and turns that have surprising rel-
evance to our world today.
The Oregon Historical Society
is proud to host Chinese Ameri-
can: Exclusion/Inclusion, on dis-
play now through June 1.
In addition, a second exhibi-
tion entitled Beyond the Gate: A
Tale of Portland’s Historic China-
towns, is also open to the public.
This original exhibit tells the hun-
dred year history of Portland’s Old
Chinatown (1850-1905) and New
Chinatown (1905-1950).
Unbeknownst to many Orego-
nians, Portland in fact was home
to the second largest Chinatown in
the nation in 1900.
During World War II, Chinese Americans and their supporters peti-
tioned Congress to repeal the Chinese Exclusion Act.
A series of public programs on scheduled this year at both the Ore-
