March 9, 2016 Page 13 Obituary Advocate for Teen Moms Remembered Dr. Alberta Phillips Dr. Alberta Phillips, a Portland woman dedicated to helping teen mothers and who opened an alter- native school for youth slipping through the cracks of the public school system, has died. Alberta Inez Phillips was born April 24, 1929 in Burleson, Tex- as to her parents, Alan and Geor- gia Phillips. Upon graduation from high school she relocated to Vanport with her mother. After the Vanport Flood they moved to Portland and joined Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church un- der pastor Dr. O.B. Williams. She joined Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in 1953 and has been a member for 62 years. She was the Youth Choir Di- rector at Morning Star and be- came the Youth President of the National Baptist Convention. She received an honorary Doctoral Degree from Multnomah School of the Bible. She was employed at St. Vin- cent’s Hospital for 38 years working in the maternity ward as a surgical technician. Upon retir- ing, she had a great concern for the youth who were falling be- hind or dropping out of the public school system.
