Renewal and Repurpose
July 29 – A new chapter begins for what was once a rundown
corner of northeast Portland’s Cully Neighborhood as a coalition
of local nonprofits and community organizations have united to
purchase and transform the triangle block of land that for years
accommodated strip clubs and other adult businesses.
Our Roots Run Deep
Aug. 12 – Local genealogist and historian Stephen Hanks is bring-
ing local African American history to life with his community tours
project, showcasing some of the historic places were black people
lived in the city and state.
Ambassadors for Peace
Aug. 19 – Regena Warren and
a collaborative group Black
Women for Peace give voice
to youth and gang violence by
promoting responsibility and
empowerment at their annual
Peace Festival.
Finally Teammates
Sept. 16 – For the first time
in their academic careers, two
Portland brothers, four years
apart, are playing football
on the same team. Cameron
Scarlett and his brother Bren-
nan’s tenure as teammates at
Stanford University will only last
a season, but their shared ex-
perience will remain a standout
moment in their lives.
