October 14, 2015 Page 5 Earthquake Info Fair Saturday A free earthquake information fair for the public will be held Sat- urday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. at the University of Portland Chiles Center in north Portland. Fair attendees will receive im- portant tips on how to commu- nicate when a disaster disrupts familiar lines of communication. The event will also offer infor- mation on how to search homes, schools, and workplaces after an earthquake when such things as glass and heavy objects are placed in dangerous places. Information on fire safety, first aid, water ra- tioning and filtering, food storage, pet care, sanitation, and earth- quake insurance and seismic home retrofits, will also be covered. The event is sponsored by the Cascadia Region Earthquake Work- group with support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Black Male Achievement Focus Representatives from across the coun- try will be in Portland this week to focus on the Black Male Achievement initiative. Portland was selected as one of 11 cit- ies to participate in the national program to improve outcomes for black men and boys. The program is designed to work across public and private sectors and among jurisdictions to help support youth in for key areas – education, employment, family stability, and criminal justice. At the moment, Portland’s chapter is housed in the Office of Equity and Hu- man Rights within Mayor Charle Hales’ portfolio, and the organization works with officials in the Multnomah County gov- ernment, as well as with for-profit and Michael Alexander, former president of the Urban League non-profit groups to create access to jobs of Portland, speaking with youth from the Black Male and mentoring.
