Rose Festival Fun -- City-
Fair, the Portland Rose Fes-
tival waterfront celebration on
the downtown waterfront with car-
nival rides,
live music,
tasty treats
and dozens
of
shops
and wares,
among other attractions, is open Friday, Saturday
and Sunday this weekend, and then opens again for
another extended weekend through Sunday, June 7
as Portland’s Rose Festival comes into full swing.
Starlight Parade -- One of the most popular Rose
Festival events, the Portland General Electric/
SOLVE Starlight Parade takes off Saturday, May
30, offering funky, eclectic fun for everyone, from
traditional marching bands and flood-lit floats, to
glow-in-the-dark umbrellas and unique hand-built
entries. The parade begins at 7:30 p.m. at North-
west Burnside and Ninth Avenue and then travels
through downtown Portland and ends at Lincoln
High School
Essential Gus Van Sant -- The Northwest Film
Center is currently showing a series of films by Gus
Van Sant, the Portland director honored as one of
the most talented and imaginative filmmakers of the
indie film renaissance. The series, which includes
such notable successes such as “Drugstore Cow-
boy,” “My Own Private Idaho,” and “Elephant,”
along with other movies that influenced Van Sant’s
film practice, runs through Friday, June 5.

Norman Sylvester -- Boogie Cat Norman Sylves-
ter and his band Wednesday, May 27 at the Haw-
thorne Lobster House; Norman is a guest with Ed
Neumann on Sunday; May 31 at Bradford’s; and
Sylvester and the band perform Friday, June 5 at the
Blue Diamond.
Soulful Showcase -- Blacque Butterfly presents
spoken word, live music and featured artists on the
second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 8
Montas and Cutumay are fre-
quently joined by other local mu-
sicians, including Carlos Flores,
Eric Johnston, Fito Roberts, Ivan
Alamos, Kiwi Karen, Lolo, and

Chicago Steppin’ Classes -- You
have seen the R. Kelly video, now it’s time
to learn the dance. Groovin’ High Steppers offer
Chicago Steppin’ classes at the Rockwood Com-
munity Center and the Colwood Golf Center. All
levels are welcome. No partner is needed. First two
lessons are free; $20 monthly fee includes both lo-

Portland’s Saturday Market -- Portland Saturday
Market in Old Town has opened for the 42nd year
bringing some of Oregon’s best handmade prod-
ucts, good eats and live entertainment from street
musicians and other artists. Located next to the Wil-
lamette River at 2 S.W. Naito Parkway, Saturday
Market is also open every Sunday through Christ-
mas Eve.
Music Millennium Free Shows -- The Music Mil-
lennium, 3158 E. Burnside, hosts in-house live per-
formances. Enjoy free music and the opportunity to

Fourth Sunday Jam Night -- A friends and fam-
ily variety comedy show in a Saturday Night Live
format with local recording and performing artists,
bands, dance crews, poets, and drama groups, takes
place each fourth Sunday of the month at 7 p.m. at
Celebration Tabernacle, 8131 N. Denver Ave. The
free event is open to the community.
Live Jazz -- Every Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m.
to 11 p.m., the Third Degrees Lounge at the Riv-
er Place Hotel, 1510 S.W. Harbor Way. No cover
