Asian Pacific Heritage
Month -- Portland’s Lan
Su Chinese Garden celebrates
Asian Pacific American Heritage
Month during May with exciting perfor-
mances every Saturday and Sunday from local cul-
tural organizations and dance troops. All of the per-
formances are at 2 p.m. except the Sunday, May 10
event, which will take place at noon.
Essential Gus Van Sant -- The Northwest Film
Center is currently showing a series of films by Gus
Van Sant, the Portland director honored as one of
the most talented and imaginative filmmakers of the
indie film renaissance. The series, which includes
such notable successes such as “Drugstore Cow-
boy,” “My Own Private Idaho,” and “Elephant,”
along with other movies that influenced Van Sant’s
film practice, runs through June 5.
Norman Sylvester -- Boogie Cat Norman Sylvester
and his band perform Friday, May 22 at Halibut’s;
Saturday, May 23 at the Nehalem Bay Blues Fes-
tival; Wednesday, May 27 at the Hawthorne Lob-
ster House; Norman is a guest with Ed Neumann on
Sunday; May 31 at Bradford’s; and Sylvester and
the band perform Friday, June 5 at the Blue Dia-
mond.
Provocative Happy Hour -- Educator, writer, orga-
nizer, and spoken word artist Walidah Imarisha will
headline a happy hour series meant to spark provoc-
ative conversations about big ideas on Thursday,
May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Alberta Rose Theater, 3000
N.E. Alberta St. Imarisha is a Portland State Uni-
versity black studies professor and author of “Why
Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon? A Hid-
den History.”
Madcap Odyssey -- “American Night: The Ballad
of Juan José,” a sharp-eyed and sharp-witted come-
dy about a Mexican immigrant who dreams of mov-
ing to the Land of the Free, plays through Saturday,
May 23 at Milgaro Theater, 525 S.E. Stark St. Tick-
ets start at $24 with discounts for students, seniors,
veterans, and groups of over 15. For more informa-

Soulful Showcase -- Blacque Butterfly presents
spoken word, live music and featured artists on the
second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 8
p.m. at E’Njoni Café, African-Mediterranean cui-
sine at 910 N. Killingsworth St.
Fall in Love with the Phantom -- A spectacular
new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical
‘The Phantom of the Opera’ is now playing through
Saturday, May 23 at Keller Auditorium. The produc-
tion boasts exciting new special effects, scenic and
lighting designs, staging and choreography. Tickets
can be purchased at the Portland Opera Box Office
and TicketWest locations.
Chicago Steppin’ Classes -- You have seen the R.
Kelly video, now it’s time to learn the dance. Groo-
vin’ High Steppers offer Chicago Steppin’ classes at
the Rockwood Community Center and the Colwood
Golf Center. All levels are welcome. No partner is
needed. First two lessons are free; $20 monthly fee
