A Night of Wonder
Motown great to
front SEI benefit
If you’ve always dreamt of
meeting Stevie Wonder, the Mo-
town sensation responsible for
some of America’s greatest soul
classics, including “Superstition”
and “You are the Sunshine of
my Life,” your dream might just
be about to come true. Wonder is
coming to Portland to celebrate
his 65th birthday and is hosting an
exclusive party as a benefit for a
local nonprofit organization that
supports at-risk urban youth, Self
Enhancement, Inc.
This exclusive and intimate
birthday celebration will take
place Friday, May 8 at the Em-
bassy Suites Hotel in downtown
Portland. The night will consist of

Siren Nation and the Soul’d Out Music Festival pres-
ent Lady Sings the Blues - A Tribute To Billie Holiday on
Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m. at the Alberta Rose Theatre
in northeast Portland. Doors open at 7 p.m. with tickets at
$12 in advance and $15 at the door.
This event brings together musicians of many genres to
pay tribute to one of the greatest jazz singers and songwrit-
ers of our time.
“Lady Day” Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer
and songwriter who made a major influence on jazz and
pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz
instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating
phrasing and tempo. Above all, she was admired all over
the world for her deeply personal and intimate approach
to singing.
Featured performers include The Cabin Project, Mi-
chael Jodell, Naomi Folsom Tatuoka, Michele VanKleef,
Rachel Robinson, Jeni Wren, Naomi LaViolette, Darka
Dusty, Natasha Kmeto and Sara Jackson Holman.

Each spring around Earth Day,
Friends of Trees makes a point of
giving away free fruit trees to the
public. This year’s annual distribu-
tion is Saturday, April 18, meaning
that hundreds of bare-root stock
fruit trees will be available for the
taking for an entire day.
The selections include apple,
pear, plum, and other varieties.
Trees are about 4 to 6 feet tall,
making them very light and easy to
transport. A suggested $5 donation
is appreciated but not required, and
no one will be turned away.
