February 4, 2015 The Portland Observer Black Arts & History Month Page 15 Entertainment Clowns Without Borders The best variety, circus, and physi- cal theatre performers in the North- west come together to put on an incredible, family-friendly show to support Clowns Without Borders, a great cause, on Friday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Da Vinci Middle School Audi- torium, 2508 N.E. Everett. This year's show includes the talented juggling of Patrick McGuire, straight from Cirque du Soleil; Charlie Brown, a Portland favorite; the acrobatic antics of the Echo Theatre's -Zags; Rhys Thomas, genius juggler; Shoehorn, the saxo- phone-playing tap dancing phenom- enon; Leapin' Louie Lichtenstein, comic lasso-twirler extraordinaire; and many other performers. All proceeds of the show go di- rectly to Clowns Without Borders- USA’s work of relieving trauma through laughter in areas of crisis around the world. Tickets are on a sliding scale of $10 to $30 adults and $9 for kids 12 and under with $35 family packages. Celebrating Black Writers North Library hosts ‘Read In’ In celebration of Black History month, the historic North Portland Library hosts its annual African- American Read-In, a gathering where guest readers share passages from works by their favorite black writers. The event is one of a “chain” of Read-Ins held across the country to introduce people to the breadth of black literature available, both con- temporary and classic. Portland’s Read-In will take place Sunday, Feb.8, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the North Portland Library, located at 512 N. Killingsworth St., next to the Jefferson High School’s field and across the street from Port- land Community College’s Cascade Campus.
