Empower the Dream
King daughter
to keynote
scholarship
benefit
Vancouver Avenue First Bap­
tist Church will be raising schol­
arship funds at two upcoming
benefits, including a major com ­
munity event in February that
will include Dr. Bernice A. King,
the daughter of Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.
The first event is happening
on Saturday, Jan. 17 when a
Drum M ajor Scholarship Ben­
efit Luncheon takes place at
Legacy Emanuel Hospital with
Portland educator Michael Grice
serving as keynote speaker.
The second benefit is the
church s ninth annual “Empower
the Dream” Drum M ajor Ecu­
menical Community Scholarship
Service on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2
p.m.
An empowering celebration
of unity, love, hope and convic­
tion that is open to all members
of all of the Portland community
at large, the service honors the
valiant lives, the prudent visions
and the communal contributions
of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
Coretta Scott King, Yolanda
Denise King and Rosa Parks.
The special keynote address
will be given by Dr. Bernice A.
King who is K ing’s youngest
daughter. She is the C hief Ex­
ecutive O fficer o f The King
Center which was founded by
her late mother, Mrs. Coretta
Scott-King in 1968.

Commissioner Charles Jordan.
State Rep. Lew Fredericks will
serve as master of ceremonies.

Dream” are $20 for adults, and
$6 for children and teens, and
are available online through
Ticketbud.com or in person at
the church office located 3138
N. Vancouver Ave. A packed
house is expected and space is
limited.
The Drum Major Scholarship
Fund was established by Pastor
J.W. Matt Hennessee and the
Vancouver Avenue First Bap­
tist Church to financially support
students who have made a plan
to seek higher education or de­
velop a vocational trade.
