World War II Memorial Dedicated
Oregon is one of the last states
to create a memorial to those who
fought and died in World War II.
Located at Wilson Park on the
Oregon State Capital grounds in
Salem, the World War II Memo
rial was finished this year after 5
years of construction. A dedica
tion ceremony in June drew over
300 veterans and a crowd of over
2,000.
The ceremony also honored
the entire generation of Orego
nians who supported the war on
the home front, such as the hun
dreds of people employed in the
shipbuilding jobs in Portland.
The site features a 33-foot-
tall granite pillar with granite
walls listing the names of nearly
3 ,8 0 0 O re g o n ia n s k ille d in
W orld W ar II.

Job Training for Veterans and Jobless
A Portland non-profit in partnership with
several community based organizations and
economic development agencies are gearing
up to offer job training to veterans and people
who have been unemployed for a long time.
The effort will be led by Worksystems,
Inc. which recently received an $8.5 million
grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to
train and prepare 1,000 people for jobs in the
manufacturing and information technology
sectors from the Portland area and south
west Washington.
The commitment is to train 850 long-term
unemployed residents and 150 career-seek
ing veterans who need skill development to
obtain employment. The grant will fund criti
cal occupational skill training while fast-
tracking participants through industry
credentialing and certification programs, giv
ing them the skills needed by employers.
Participants will also receive paid work ex
perience, job placement assistance, and on-
the-job training to help reboot their careers.
“These resources will infuse local high-
growth manufacturing and IT businesses
with trained, local workers while addressing
a key workforce issue that has hampered our
economy: long-term unemployment,” said
Andrew McGough, Worksystems executive
director.
Local Clinic Offers VA Dental Services
Dr. Edward Ward of the Interstate Dental
Clinic in north Portland is one of the local
providers of dental services for veterans
under the Veterans Affairs Dental Insurance
Program.
The VA would like all veterans and ben
eficiaries to have access to good oral health.
Good oral health is more than just a nice smile
or ability to chew favorite foods - it impacts
a person’s overall health throughout his or
her life.
Enrolled veterans and beneficiaries of the
VA ’ s Civilian Health and Medical Program,
have the opportunity to purchase dental
insurance at a reduced cost. The VA is offer
ing this service through Delta Dental and
MetLife. The benefit, however, is not avail
able to all veterans.
The program is a three-year, national
pilot program to assess the feasibility and
advisability o f providing a prem ium-based
dental insurance plan to eligible individu
als.
Beginning Nov. 15, individuals interested
in participating may complete an application
online, over the phone or by mail. For more
