INSTRUCTOR, TRADES
Portland Community College (PCC) seeks applications for the position of
Instructor, Trades. This is a full time (1.0 FTE) probationary faculty position
commencing September 2015. Hours of work may include evening or
weekend teaching assignments. Initial assignment will be at the Cascade
Campus. Portland Community College (PCC) is the largest institution of
post-secondary education in Oregon, serving more than 95,000 students. The
college district is located in Northwest Oregon, and offers classes through four
campuses and three workforce training centers, and at approximately 200
other locations throughout the district. A growing distance learning program
enrolls more than 23,500 students annually.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Satisfactory references and successful completion of the criminal background

A minimum of 5 years experience in the subject area.
A current approved license or Journey Card in the subject area is required
of instructors teaching Apprenticeship required classes or license renewal
classes, for any Oregon State Apprenticeable Trade.

INSTRUCTOR, TRADES
This position is part of Cascade's Trades and Industry Department located
at the Swan Island Trades Center, a 20,000 square-foot training facility in
Portland’s unique urban industrial district. The successful candidate will
support Trades and Industry with our pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, and/
or degree and certificate efforts. Apprenticeship programs include: Limited
Maintenance Electricians, Millwrights, Industrial Mechanics, Manufacturing
Plant Electricians and Stationary Engineers. Degrees and certificates include
a two-year Facilities Maintenance Technology degree and less-than-one year
HVAC Installer’s Certificate.

In terms of the type of success
she’d like to see at PCC, Edwards
emphasized her interest in remov­
ing barriers to education for stu­
dents. That includes making sure
there is ample childcare available,
that financially aid is readily avail-
able, that organizations for women
and people o f color remain active
and well-funded.
Edwards also spoke o f the PCC
C ascade C am pus’s plans for a
Multicultural Center which is com­
ing to the north Portland campus as
part of a new Student Union Build­
ing that’s scheduled to open in Janu­
ary. She is eager to have such a
facility become the go-to place for
multi cultural attractions and pro­
gramming.
Edwards spoke not only of lifting
cultural and economic barriers but
o f also integrating the community
and neighborhood as well.
Since coming to Portland, Edwards
has joined the board at the Portland
Community Reinvestment Initiatives,
an organization that helps low-in­
come Portland families and individu­
als find affordable housing and sta­
bility. She’s also on the advisory
board for the Oregon Association of
Minority Entrepreneurs.
Edwards activity in the commu­
nity is matched by her interest in the
school and even the details o f the
new construction on campus.
“We don’t build fences or gates
here,” Edwards said.
The cam pus’s goal is to be open
and inviting, to draw in the local
community and show others that an
education can be functional and be
accessible to everyone.
COMPENSATION
2014-2015 salary range - $50,374/yr to $87,351/yr. Hires will normally be at
Step 1, Step 2, or Step 3, depending on experience. 2015/2016 salary range
subject to negotiations.
