M etro Husband Killed in 1-5 Wreck page 17 C alen d ar page 20 Dr. Stephen Fritz honored at public memorial B y O livia O livia T he P ortland O bserver Dr. Stephen Fritz, husband of P o rtla n d C ity C o m m issio n e r Am anda Fritz, died Sept. 24 in a chain reaction crash on 1-5 near Salem involving multiple vehicles and wet pavem ent. The accident also critically injured Cary Marie Fairchild, a co-w orker and long­ tim e fam ily friend who was com- m uting with Fritz to the Oregon State H ospital where they both worked. Fairchild, the wife o f a Portland Fire and Rescue em ­ ployee, suffered significant brain inj ury and remains in the hospital ’ s intensive care unit. On Sunday, crowds of people gathered at Terry Shrunk Park in downtown Portland to celebrate Dr. Fritz’s life, one that had touched many people and was said to have brought so much light into the com­ munity. Many people came in cos­ tume at the encouragement of the Fritz family, who released a state­ ment inviting people to show up wearing something “appropriate to honor him and/or amuse yourself and others.” The memorial also celebrated Fritz’s membership in the Portland Cacophony Society, a group of ad­ venture-seeking community mem­ bers with an interest in the unique and bizarre. Fritz was known to play Mondo Croquet with the society, a version o f croquet played with sledge hammers and bowling balls.
