You and Your Racist Brain:
‘Science on Tap’ to explore the neuroscience of prejudice
Science on Tap is a science lecture series
where you can sit back, enjoy a pint of your
favorite beverage, and laugh while you learn.
Produced in partnership with Washing
ton State University Vancouver and held at
the K iggins T h eatre in dow ntow n
Vancouver, community residents are invited
to listen to experts talk about the science in
your neighborhood and around the world.
You don't have to be a science geek to have
fun - all you need is a thirst for knowledge.
On Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. the topic
will be “You and Your Racist Brain: The
Neuroscience of prejudice.”
People have the tendency to characterize
other people who do not share the same traits
as somehow different. But why do some
people find such differences repulsive to the
point that they exhibit extreme prejudice?
Dr. Larry Sherman, a senior scientist in the
Division of Neuroscience at Oregon Health
& Science University will explore the neuro
science behind prejudice and racism. He will
discuss the so-called "cross-race effect" and
how the brain can overcome this reaction,
raising intriguing possibilities about how
prejudice and racism can be reversed.
Accompanying Sherman will be members
of the cast of the musical "Parade," a theat
rical telling of the story of the murder of Mary
Phagan and the trial of Leo Frank.
The Kiggins Theatre is located at 1011
Main St. A suggested cover of $10 will be
requested for Science on Tap series. Food
and drinks, including beer, wine, pizza slices,
popcorn and snacks will be available.
