drawn and fired repeatedly, accord
ing to two men who said they wit
nessed the shooting that sparked
two nights of unrest in suburban St.
Louis.
The FBI opened an investigation
Monday into the death of 18-year-
old Michael Brown, who police said
was shot multiple times Saturday
after being confronted by an officer
in Ferguson, a suburb o f21,000that's
nearly 70 percent black.
Authorities were vague about
exactly what led the officer to open
fire, except to say that the shooting
was preceded by a scuffle of some
kind. It was unclear whether Brown

Tragedy on MAX
Last Thursday morning saw a man struck
and killed by a MAX train at the East
Burnside Street and 122nd Avenue sta
tion; he was pronounced dead at the
scene. MAX Blue Line service was
delayed for part of the day in the wake
of the event.
$25,000 Gas Costs Man
A Portland man was arrested T hurs
day for stealing more than $25,000
worth o f gasoline from Portland area
service stations. C hristopher Scott
Beard, 39, is accused of using a stolen
credit card to fill a 300 gallon tank in
the back o f his truck with gasoline on
m u ltip le o c c a s io n s . B ea rd w as
booked into the M ultnomah County
Jail on 12 counts o f Fraudulent Use of
a Credit Card and 12 counts o f Theft
in the First Degree.
Drunk-Driving Officer
An off-duty police officer crashed into
a fire hydrant, fence, and yard in Gresham
last Thursday and subsequently was
arrested. No injuries were reported, but
the crash caused about $5,000 in prop
erty damage. The officer, Sgt. D. James
McMurrary was charged with drunk
driving, reckless driving and second-
degree criminal mischief.

Steve Ballmer officially became the new
owner of the Los Angeles Clippers on
Tuesday. The record $2 billion sale
closed after a California court confirmed
the authority of Shelly Sterling to sell
the franchise to the former Microsoft
CEO. Her estranged husband, Donald
Sterling, had unsuccessfully fought the
sale of the team after the NBA banned
him from owning the franchise for mak
ing racist comments.
