Next Steps for the EPA’s Clean Power Plan
Setting the

tackle clim ate disruption, deep-

the Koch brothers are spreading

of
disinformation.
So I’d like to set the record
straight on what the standard ac
tually does.
The E P A ’s Clean Pow er Plan
(that’s w hat the agency named
the new standard) calls for the
federal governm ent to limit car
bon pollution from all powerplants
for the first time. The plan creates
a roadm ap that w ould set our
country on a path to reduce car
bon pollution (com pared to 2005
levels) by 27 percent in 2020, 29
percent in 2025, and 30 percent in
2030.
Carbon pollution is the main
contributor to global w arm ing,
m aking extrem e w eather worse
— including m ore severe floods,
wildfires and droughts. It’s
also linked to life-threatening
air pollution, like the kind o f
sm og that can trigger asthm a
attacks.
The standard sets carbon
red u ctio n goals fo r every
state, and gives them several build
ing blocks to m eet those targets,
including increasing the use o f
renew able energy and energy ef
ficiency. Then, it’s up to each
state to write a plan that will m eet
its own goal. While the plan doesn ’ t
solve the problem o f clim ate dis
ruption by itself, it gives the states
a great fram ew ork to m ake sig
nificant progress.
The standard opens up the op
portunity for every state to chart
its own energy future. The EPA
set each state’s target by taking
into account the energy resources
available in each state to m eet the
30 percent goal.
The plan also requires energy
com panies to reduce their carbon
pollution by harnessing techno
logical innovation as they transi
tion to cleaner alternatives. Done
