Collaborative Life Sciences Building Opens
Partnerships
expand health and
science research
A first-of-its-kind multi-university partner­
ship will expand health and science research
and education to benefit all Oregonians,
Oregon Health & Science University, Port­
land State University and Oregon State Uni­
versity will host a grand opening ceremony
and tours on Thursday, J une 26 for employees,
students and invited guests to celebrate the
official completion of the Collaborative Life
Sciences Building.
The $295 million, nearly 650,000-square-
foot building on the OHSU Schnitzer Campus
in the South Waterfront District is the first to
combine the resources of multiple universities
to offer the best possible science education
and research opportunities for students from
all health care professions.
The facility will strengthen partnerships
between the universities while expanding their
teaching facilities, class sizes and research
activities.
The new building’s features include a simu­
lation center that provides "real life" skills
training to health care practitioners, students
and staff from all health professions; a 400-

seat lecture hall that encourages small-group
collaboration and can accommodate large edu­
cational and civic gatherings; and open-de-
sign labs that put research on display.
The site will also house state-of-the-art
School of Dentistry and dental clinics that
serve the public; an open atrium and walkway
that provide opportunities for conversation
and seating space for informal meetings to
encourage collaboration; and shared space
for OHSU, PSU and OSU faculty offices to
encourage frequent idea sharing, intermin-
gling.
Sustainable building features include green
roofs, storm water collection for non-potable
water uses throughout the building, and en-
ergy-efficient lighting and climate control; and
space for retail.
