NAACP Honors Music Icon
Media impresario and humani­
tarian Quincy Jones has been se­
lected as the 99th recipient of the
NAACP’s Spingam Medal, the civil
rights group’s highest honor.
Awarded for outstanding and
noble achievement by an American
of African descent, the medal will be
bestow ed on July 23 at 105th
NAACP National Convention in Las
Vegas.
Jones is also a respected hu­
m anitarian. In 1985, he pioneered
the m odel of using celebrity to
raise money and aw areness for a
cause with "We Are the W orld." Quincy Jones
The song rem ains the best-selling
single o f all-tim e, and raised more
than $63 Million for Ethiopian fam­
ine relief.
"Quincy Jones is an icon of the
entertainm ent industry who has
shaped the lives of millions through
music, film , and m ore," stated
NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock.
"But what makes Mr. Jones so de­
serving of this award is how he uses
his celebrity and influence to ad­
vance critical humanitarian issues
across the globe. We are honored to
count him among our prestigious
Spingam medalists."
College Hosts Latino Festival
T he six th a n n u a l F e s tiv a l
Latino will take place on Satur­
day, June 7, at Clackamas Com mu­
nity College in Oregon City from
noon to 4:30 p.m. The festival
brings a variety of resources to
the Latino com m unity.
The free event includes music,
food, health and financial resources,
soccer and an introduction to the
college through inspirational speak­
ers and tours.
Organizer Carni lo Sanchez, who
teaches CCC’s Spanish GED pro­
gram, said the festival is an oppor­
tunity to introduce the Latino com-
munity to the college and other im­
portant community resources.
Entertainment at this year's festi­
val includes the popular Ballet

Stephanie Martinez, Azteca danc­
ers, Colombian dance and salsa
dancing.
